"Guys, we should probably get going soon." We've spent the last three hours just goofing off, which was actually a lot of fun, but Ashtyn and I have been a little awkward since Patrick shoved me onto her.
"Dom, are you listening?"
"What? Oh, yeah. Let's go." Ashtyn gets in, and I'm about to when Patrick closes the door, turning me towards him by my arm.
"I'm sorry about shoving you. But honestly, you should've just kissed her."
"And why exactly would I do that?" I cross my arms, raising my eyebrow.
"You've got a thing for her for one, and two, you guys would make an adorable couple!" I roll my eyes.
"You know I can't afford to like her, let alone be with her. And besides, what makes you think she'd ever want to be with me?" He just gives me a look that basically says 'are you serious right now?' I just roll my eyes and get in the jeep. As Patrick walks around to get to the passenger side, Ashtyn turns to me.
"When we get back to camp, we need to talk about what happened." I can feel my heart start beating out of my chest, so I just turn on the radio, which would usually calm me down. But this time, I can't focus hard enough on the music to get the idea of having to talk about that out of my head.
Patrick eats like half of the food as we drive back to camp. It takes nearly an hour to get there, but still, that's a lot of food to eat in such a short time. Ashtyn and I don't say or eat anything the whole drive. Patrick breaks the silence when we park.
"So I told Daniel that Amber and the fucking douche bag are sleeping in the tent with him. I'm gonna sleep with you guys." I nod and Ashtyn hugs him. We all get out, carrying the food to our tent. Nobody's out here, so they're probably all asleep. It's pretty late honestly, but it's surprising that they're not still out here.
I'm the last one in our tent, so I'm the one that closes it. I sit next to Ashtyn and across from Patrick. None of us says anything for a while, but then I think about something and can't stop myself from asking.
"Has he ever done something like that to you guys before?"
"Yeah, about two years ago. He was fifteen or so then, and he was huge. Anyways, we were all at his house and he said something. I'm not even sure what now. But both of us got super defensive and told him to shut up. He got really mad and suddenly hit Patrick. I jumped on his back to get him to stop, and he got me off before throwing a glass plate at my head." She moves some of her hair away from her ear and I see a few scars. Part of her ear is missing, just a little piece, but it's gone just the same. From the end of her jaw to where her ear should be is a long pink scar.
"After doing that, he beat Patrick up. Spencer's mom came home and took us to the hospital. I had to get stitches. We were both there for almost two weeks. Spencer had broken Patrick's arm in six different places and had given him a serious concussion." I just sit there, staring at her scar and in shock about how he could do something like that and also how they forgave him for that.
"Dom, it's really not a big deal. We forgave him for that and we'll eventually forgive him for this too."
"Why? How?"
"Because he's a good guy most of the time. It's been two years since he's done anything."
"He still did it though Patrick! What's to stop him from doing it again?" He just lays down, facing away from me. Ashtyn lays down too, but she doesn't turn away. She grabs my hand and pulls me so I'm laying down in front of her. She gives me a soft smile that I return before she closes her eyes. She falls asleep pretty quickly, as does Patrick, but my mind won't stop wandering to what Spencer did today and two years ago. How could someone so normal be so terrifying?
