today is may the fifth, or cinco de mayo, as it is said in castillian. today marks the 154th anniversary of the batalla de puebla (battle of puebla). it is NOT mexican independence day, as some people wrongly believe, and it is not a day to use as a sorry excuse to drink and eat tacos if you are not mexican. it is a day to remember the heroes of our beloved méxico. it is a day to remember that we prevailed against adversity. no one thought we would win this battle. we didn't win the war, but this battle was indeed an important event. i mean, we BEAT THE FRENCH who were trying to invade our country.
they had guns, horses, advanced military tactics. we had peasants, a few soldiers, and a brave leader who prevented the fall of puebla.
fun fact: many of the peasants who fought in the war were armed with pots and pans, using boiling water on their opponents.
just imagine the amount of bravery to go out onto a battle field where THE ENEMY had the upper hand and you know there's a huge chance that you won't survive...i would have been terrified to say the least.
la batalla de puebla showed us that we could fight back as a nation who was thought as powerless by the europeans. they thought we were inferior to them because méxico was a struggling nation who had only recently gained their independence from the spanish. but we showed them we could protect what belonged to us, and even though we ended up losing that war, we demonstrated that we wouldn't give up without a fight. "if we burn, you burn with us." little hunger games referrence there.
i hate it when ignorant people in the united states celebrate it and they aren't even mexican. maybe that isnt exactly the way i want to word it. i mean, i like it when they do it correctly and celebrate the tradition and history behind the holiday. what i hate is when people call it "drinko de mayo" and use it as an excuse to have a huge party, wear traditional outfits like they are halloween costumes, and eat tacos. to those ignorant people i say: since when did you care about mexican culture? oh, that's right, you dont. you just want to stuff yor face with tacos and drink til you pass out.
that is NOT what its about.
drink whenever you want, but dont use la batalla de puebla as an excuse for your deunkeness. and do not call it drinko de mayo because i take it as an insult. it is a negative approproation of my culture and i will not tolerate it. wear a traditional mexican outfit, but because you appreciate the culture and the history, not because it is stylish. eat tacos if you want, but then dont turn around and say you dont want us in your country. we'll go, but we're taking the tacos with us. lol jk.
but really. appreciate what cinco de mayo is really about.
