Chapter 13

The next day Phillips called a briefing. Steve, Peggy and the rest of the commandoes were all present, even Abi after a considerable amount of coffee and painkillers.

"Johann Schmidt belongs in a bughouse. He thinks he's a god and he's willing to blow up half the world to prove it. Starting with the USA." Phillips told them.

"Schmidt's working with powers beyond our capabilities." Howard said walking to the front and taking a seat next to Abi.

"If he gets across the Atlantic he will wipe out the entire Eastern seaboard in an hour." Abi told them.

"How much time we got?" Gabriel asked.

"According to my new best friend, under twenty-four hours." Phillips replied.

"Where is he now?" Monty asked.

"Hydra's last base is here. In the Alps, five-hundred feet below the surface." Phillips pointed on the map. He threw the picture in front of Jim.

"So what are we supposed to do?" Jim enquired. "I mean it's not like we can just knock on the front door."

"Why not?" Steve said. Everyone at the table turned to look at him. "That's exactly what we're gonna do."

So that's exactly what they did. They broke in through the front door. Well they got Steve captured so that he could keep Schmidt busy while the others zip lined in through the windows. Monty, Gabriel and Dum Dum swung through the window and took out the hydra agents. Schmidt however, ran down the corridor towards his planes; the Valkyries. The rest of the Commandoes blew open another one of the door and cut off the rest of the hydra agents. Phillips kept Abi back because of her hand but she still infiltrated with the assault team. They had hydra on the ropes.

Steve chased Schmidt through the base but was too late to catch the plane he boarded. Steve ran through the warzone after the plane but couldn't quite catch it. That was until Phillips, Peggy and Abi pulled up in Schmidt's car.

"Get in!" Abi yelled.

They managed to catch up to the plane.

"I'm coming with you!" Abi yelled over the noise.

"No you're not!" Steve yelled back. "You can't climb; your hand! I'll get him I promise." Steve pulled her into a hug.

"You better come back!" She pulled away.

"Hold it steady!" Steve yelled to Phillips as he prepared to jump.

"Wait!" Peggy yelled also standing. She pulled him into a kiss. "Go get him."

Steve looked at them all.

"I'm not kissing you." Phillips said.

Steve climbed out of the car and jumped onto the landing gear of the plane. As he did so, Phillips turned the car fast to avoid the end of the runway that was a drop into a ravine. They stopped right on the edge. They all watched as the plane flew off.

Abi, Peggy and Phillips drove back and immediately ran to the control centre. They sat and waited for radio contact from Steve.

"Come in this is Captain Rogers, do you read me?" Steve's voice came over the system.

Jim who was sat at the coms replied. "Captain Rogers, what is your...." Jim was cut off by Abi pushing him out of the way.

"Steve is that you? Are you alright." She asked.

"Abi. Schmidt's dead." Steve told her. Relief flooded her system.

"What about the plane?" Peggy asked joining her at the coms.

"That's a little bit tougher to explain." Steve muttered.

"Give us your coordinates. We'll find you a safe landing site." Peggy said. Dread filled Abi's veins.

"There's not going to be a safe landing. But I can try and force it down." Steve said.

"Steve I just lost Bucky, I can't lose you too." Abi choked out.

"I'll got Howard on the line, he'll know what to do." Peggy said to both Abi and Steve.

"There's not enough time." Steve replied. "This things moving too fast and it's heading for New York. I got to put her in the water."

"Please don't do this. We've got time. We can work it out." Abi said.

"Right now I'm in the middle of nowhere. If I wait any longer a lot of innocent people are going to die."

"Steve?" Abi muttered.

"Abi this is my choice; I want you to make me a promise. I want you to move to Los Angles like you and Bucky always talked about. Can you do that?" He asked.

"Yes. Yes, I promise." She muttered.

"Thank you. Peggy?"

"I'm here."

"I'm gonna need a rain check on that dance." Steve said. Abi stood up and started crying.

"All right." Peggy said. "A week next Saturday at the Stork club."

"You got it." Steve replied.

"Eight o' clock on the dot. Don't you dare be late. Understood?" Peggy told him sternly.

"You know I still don't know how to dance." Steve said.

"I'll show you how. Just be there." Peggy's voice cracked.

"We'll have the band play something slow. I'd hate to step on your...." The radio cut out and they all froze.

"Steve? Steve? Steve?" Peggy asked but got no reply.

That was when Abi lost it. She picked up a chair and threw it through the nearest window. When Jim tried to calm her down she shoved him out the way and stormed out. Phillips tried to stop her but she pushed past him as well. She grabbed her weapons and her bag and got on one of the motorbikes. She wasn't thinking straight and she knew it. But she didn't care. She just set off. That was the last time Peggy, Phillips or anyone else ever saw her. When Steve was pulled out of the ice sixty-seven years later he searched for her file. She was reported missing in action two weeks after he put the plane in the ice. Two months later she was pronounced killed in action. No one knew what happened to her until Loki showed up in Stuttgart and everything came back to haunt them.
