I couldn't help but blush. "Thanks, you do too." I wasn't lying.
Surprisingly, and to Stacey's utter horror, those were the only words Vincent and I exchanged. Some girl would always go up to him and try to make small talk. Although, the one thing that worked in my favor was how he kept stealing glances at me.
"Remember how girls would be all over me?" Evan took in a mouthful of beer.
"They still are. Just not here." Stacey shot him a cold look. "These are our friends. They know what kind of a jerk you are."
Stacey was never fond of Evan's player ways, and she would taunt him the moment she got a chance to. It had been this way since high school. But despite all of this, she loved him to death. Both of us did.
"Hey! Camilla Parker is here." Evan suddenly snapped his head, "Remember that time we hooked up in the classroom? We went at it right on the teacher's table!"
He was met with an "eww" in unison. Back then, I and Stacey would slut shame Camilla for doing that. Among ourselves, of course. That was a time when we were far from sex and all things related to it. It would be an understatement to say that Evan was advanced.
But he wasn't offended; instead, he headed in her direction. "I'll see you around, ladies!"
We rolled our eyes.
"Let's go now." Stacey seemed to be in fighter mode. "You have to score Vincent, Ash."
"It's gonna be so awkward, Stace." I covered my face with both my hands. "Everybody is already throwing themselves at him. I don't want to look desperate, do I?"
"Stace?"
"Stacey?" I uncovered my face and looked beside me. Of course, she was gone. Classic Stace. Once she was fixed upon doing something, she would do it no matter what. I just wished she wouldn't embarrass me.
I gathered the courage to look in Vincent's direction and have a look at the antics of my best friend. I could see her cutting through the small crowd of women as if the beach was greased and she was being automatically propelled towards Vincent.
"Holy shit." I muttered. "Why Stace, why?"
"Hey Vincent! Are you having fun?" She was loud enough on purpose.
I could see him mouthing something to her, but I couldn't hear him because he was being civil, unlike my lovely best friend. And there she went again.
"Hey! Did Evan tell you?" She sharply turned to face me, and gave me a huge smile. "Ashlyn is a doctor too! I'm sure you'll have loads in common!"
At that precise moment, I wished the earth would crack and swallow me whole. Or the sky would part and suck me in. I'm sure Vincent didn't think I had a beautiful smile anymore. Instead, he'd be disgusted at how I was using my best friend to approach him. But then I saw him walk towards me, escorted by... Who else?
