There's this certain kind of rush you get when you're free falling. It's as if...you know you're in some serious danger but at the same time you're having the time of your life anyway. That's how I feel whenever I'm around him. It's a crazy ride, but Im still enjoying the scenery. But he doesn't know that.
"Your turn." Cody says, eyeing me.
"Hmm... Do you have any nines?" I say, tilting my head.
"Go fish."....I know.. How exciting,right?
"Oh, come on! You're so totally lying! I know you have to have at least one nine in there somewhere!" I say, smiling.
"Cheat much?" He says leaning forward in his chair, smirking.
" No, I just know I've said every other number and each time you said go fish." I say, doing the same.
"How do you know I wasn't lying then?"
"I don't. Who's cheating now?" I counter and he smiles but the smile fades as he searches my face, his eyes landing on my lips, looking pensive. We're mere inches apart and my heart beats quicker as I think he moves just the teensiest bit closer.
"Cody?"
"Lily..."
"Kids?" My mom walks into the room, breaking the spell. As if there was a spell anyway, which there wasn't. It's not like that between me and Cody and it never will be. Something like that just won't happen. Cody's Cody. I'm Lily. We've always just been best friends and that's all we'll ever be.
My mom walks over to where we're seated at the game table and asks us what we'd like for dinner, then heads back into the kitchen. It's too late for the moment to rejuvenate, because she already made it disappear. 'Impeccable timing, Mom..' I think to myself.
"Hey, Lily?" Cody draws my attention back to him and I am once again captivated by those striking green eyes underneath that amazing dark blonde swoop of hair. It's not the first time I imagine running my fingers through those gorgeous locks just to have them land right back in place. It's not the first time I imagine him whispering sweet nothing's in my ear clear into the night. It's not the first time I imagine myself wrapped in his loving and extremely muscular embrace. Its not the first time I-"Lily?"
Right. Person. Talking to me.
"D-uuh, yes?" I stutter. He smirks and I hope with every ounce in my being he doesn't know what I was thinking.
"I was just asking if you wanted to go skating later after dinner."He says stretching, making his arm muscles flex. I gulp.
"Um,...sure."
His eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
"I mean.." I laugh nervously. Man, I'm out of whack today. The guy's an idiot if he doesn't realize that something's up with the way Im acting, which isn't the way I usually act. I can normally hide my feelings, but today was just not a great day, what with the whole starting school up again and seeing how much puberty had changed him over the summer. He'd always looked good, but... MAN. 'Thank The Lord for puberty.' I think to myself.
"What?"
"What??" I did just think that right? He didn't hear it. He couldn't have... Unless he were some sort mind reader, which is impossible.
"You said thank The Lord for-"
"Common sense!" I interrupt him. A look of utter confusion crosses over his face. "As in, thank The Lord for common sense because without it I wouldn't know to not go skating with you and I'd no doubt get into some serious trouble with you." Which I'd do with out hesitation. I don't say that last part because then I'd REALLY be in trouble.
The smirk returns to his face and I know I said the right words. To him Im the type that avoids trouble at all costs and he's the polar opposite. Saying yes to his previous question was not the normal response from me, because whenever he went skating, he normally got into the most trouble.
"Good move." He says studying me for what seems like forever but is probably only a few seconds. Then, as if deciding to go through with something he'd been debating for a while, he suddenly pushed back his chair and came over and crouched down next to me, looking up into my eyes."But I have a question." He continues.
"And I may have an answer. I guess it depends." I reply.
He looks at his hands.
"Lily...." He hesitates and looks back at me again. I raise my eyebrows as if to say,' what is it?'. His face sets in determination and I know he's just going to push through with whatever he wants to say. "Lily. Suppose I were to promise not to get into too much trouble tonight."
I laugh.
"Is that even possible for you?" I ask, smirking.
"I don't know. I've never tried." He counters, a glitter in his eyes.
"Are you going to?"
"Will you come with me?"
I think about it. What would it hurt?
" Promise me no trouble?"
He tilts his head, giving me a pointed look as if to say,'obviously, you know the answer to that.'
I sigh. "Then I guess I won't be going."
I say, my eyes drifting to the side with my eyebrows rose and my mouth quirks to the side.
"Lily." He adjusts the way he's positioned and scoots closer, urgently, gripping my hand. I suck in a breath, hopefully quietly, but by the look of the smirk on his face and judging by how close he is, I know that can't be possible." I do promise I'll try not to get you in trouble." He says earnestly.
There's a silence as I wait to answer. It's Cody. He's trouble. I'm Lily. I've never gotten in trouble. I'm totally crushing on Cody. This is a chance to spend more time with him other than in school and past all the never ending homework. This may end up being potentially dangerous. But Cody promised to try not to get me in trouble.... Hmmm..
"Let's do it."
