Frozen then Burned

Lily's POV

I duck under the ice cold water and feel the ice envelope my face. I don't care if its cold. I don't care if i get a brain freeze. Who cares about hypothermia? Just let the pain go away. I close m eyes in sweet numb serenity as the cold starts to fade. A sound resonates outside the water but i pay it no heed. Nothing matters anymore. I'm destined to die anyway.

"Lily!!" warm hands wrap around me and i am pulled out of the ice bath and a towel is draped around me. "What in the world do you think you're doing?!? Are you trying to kill yourself or somethin?!" I open my eyes and see a blurred image. The image starts to become clearer and clearer until Cody's face appears. And i am highly disappointed.

"Nooo..." I drag out. " Leave me alone...Put me back in." I slur as i bat away his hands as he tries to dry my freezing and dripping hair.

"You are not getting back in that water!!" He says, carrying me to my room, me too tired to care. He sits me on the bed and leaves me for a moment just to come back and i stare blankly into space as he slips a big baggy shirt that reaches my knees over the towel. He takes the towel and leaves me some other things to put on. "Lily, get a hold of yourself! You cant live like this! You're not going to stand a chance against Skull in this predicament! Now put your clothes on and get a grip!" He shakes me and i swallow and slowly turn my gaze to meet his. I utter one word, expressionless before his face blurs once more and i start to fall back on the bed but and caught in his arms as i seep into darkness.

"Why?"

I awaken to the sound of beeps with a white light above me and i squint my eyes in pain. I start to sit up and feel a sharp pain in my head.

"Ah!" i cry, gripping my head. Warm hands take mine and settle me back down. I look to see the owner of the hands and see Cody. "What? Cody? Whats going on? Where am i?"

"In the hospital. You blacked out and you wouldn't wake up. I called in Josh and he called 9-11 while i tried to wake you. You scared the crap out of me Lils. I thought you were dead." Cody says, panic stricken. I wince as my head has a sharp pain again.

" Well, I'm obviously not..."

"What were you thinking, Lily?!? Huh?!? Why were you in that ice bath?? Why were you under that water?? Wh-why??" Cody chokes and i can see tears lining the rims of his eyes and i my heart feels as though it falls to my stomach as he grips my hands while he sits on the bed. I'm destroying him. I'm destroying my universe. My apocalypse is near. One explosion wasn't enough.

"I-I.....I don't know...." I say, looking at my hands, my brow furrowing in confusion. "First I was burning up from the explosion and had a couple burns so i set myself an ice bath and when i got in i guess i started thinking and.... I ....I guess i just.... Gave up..." Cody shakes his head, jaw clenching and unclenching as he squeezes my hand. He lays his head on my chest to be assured of the heartbeat. Despite my emotions, I lay my fingers in his golden hair.

"Lily.... I thought i lost you...." He grips my hands like I'm his life line he pulls one to his lips. "Why would you do this to me? I cant ever...ever lose you!"

"Why, Cody?!?" I bat his hands away from me in a rage. "Why did i have to have these powers and why do you expect me to be able to use them?? Why is a scary guy trying to kill me?? Why do you care if i survive? Why cant you lose me and just let me escape all this torture?!?" My rage cools down as i ramble on. I feel weak as I realize cody's hand is still in mind and my "rage" was all imagined.. just babbles. "Cody...why cant i just be normal again? Why cant i just go home? Why cant you just let me go?"I say, running my hands through my hair.

"Because I...Because I!...." Cody jerks up and grabs my face with both hanfs, looks earnestly in my eyes and i shake my head and shrug questioning. You may be able to read my mind but I'm not able to read yours....yet.....I think, actually hoping for once that he was looking in on my thoughts. Cody purses his lips and sighs. He stands up and turns his back to me quickly, shoulders tense as he looks at the ground. "Because i need you...." He says softly. My heart seems to drop to my stomach. This is just a game. He's just playing me. Maybe all this time my assumptions that he loves me weren't true...Maybe he was faking it so that he could have me, Eminence with the power of Essence, replacement of Delia in order to defeat Skull and save the world. That's it. I was just replacing Delia. Filling the job of someone who died before they could finish it. My eyes start to water and i choke out a sob and furrow my brow and i lower my head. My heart starts to burn and suddenly my eyes burn too and so does my blood and i just know that if i look at my hands, they'll be sparking with energy. I raise my head and see Cody slowly turn around wide eyed and if looks could kill, he'd be dead right now as i glare at him, probably looking quite evil-or possessed- with my head lowered a bit still. I know he's been reading my mind this whole time.

"No, Lily-" He starts but its too late. I once again pick a target to release my energy. Apparently Essence is a very strong physical force. I aim my hands at the heart monitor and other machines and release the Essence. Once again there's an explosion, but this time I'm not thrown back. Then again i am in a bed. The machines explode and the sound to call in a nurse goes off and doesn't stop. Once again there's ash falling from the air, but this time it's not all over me, just all over the area the machines were. But i still feel so angry. So i rip off the cords from the machines that were attached to my body and bolt out of the bed. I look at Cody with tear filled eyes and shake my head, trying to hold the tears back. I'm sure he can read my mind on all that I'm saying to him. And everything I'm about to say.

"Lily, don't...."

But instead of saying all the things i know he already knows, i say one thing.

"I will not be a replacement." and barge out of the hospital room just as a frazzled nurse comes in, looking shocked at the whole situation, Cody's pained expression mixed with, i dont know, regret?, the exploded machines, and me leaving in my predicament. He saw me use my powers this time, but I ignore the flicker of pride. It's useless. There's nothing to be proud of when you're model No2.  But I know that I have plenty of energy to leave this hospital, and Cody, behind.
