The nine of them sat on the wraparound porch of Big House, abstractly watching the orange sunlight filter out of the sky, it's saturated drops casting glowing light upon the violent red of the strawberry fields.
"I don't want to leave," Malia mumbled, staring out into the distance and completely ignoring the fact that Stiles' arm was subconsciously draped around her as they occupied one of the two large porch swings. Noticing this, Kira smiled slightly from her position on the stairs. Malia getting over her crush could only be for the best. Though what prompted this was still slightly unclear. Little did Kira know, it was her.
"Yeah quests suck," Allison yawned, stretching her lithe cat-like body further across the second swing as her feet rested in Isaac's lap. Since the night of the Chariot Races, the two of them had settled into a kind of comfortable proximity though both seemed to be on their guard permanently- Allison withholding because of her position as a Hunter while Isaac's general sense of aloofness was diminished but present.
"No I mean ever."
Lydia simply smiled in response, hair fanning out in the slight breeze, spreading it's alluring colour far enough to catch Stiles' eye unbeknownst to her. "I barely know what home feels like anymore."
"This."
"What?"
"This is what home feels like," Scott grinned, affection brimming in his eyes, as his gaze flitted around- from Kira beside him to Brett who sat furthest away from him.
"Scott that may be the most sentimental thing you've ever said in your life," Kira groaned, but she couldn't help but smile.
"Seriously bro, go back to eyeing girls or something. I don't like this."
"Thank you. See Stiles? Kira gets it."
"I don't get it but sure, we can indulge you."
"When did Scott McCall get philosophical," Brett scoffed, shaking his head.
"I will have you know, I'm so much more than just a ladies man."
"Yes Scott, you're a fiercely loyal ladies man although I'm not exactly sure how that works."
"When it comes down to it, you know I'd die for you guys."
"I don't know where I'm going to go when we break for Thanksgiving," Malia shrugged, looking like she couldn't care less though everyone present knew that a tinge of sadness tainted her nonchalance. Malia's mother was a mercenary who incidentally couldn't care less for her daughter.
"Wouldn't it be great if we had this place to ourselves?"
"Your wish is my command," the raven haired boy sat up straight, eyes glittering with a passion. "You guys don't seem to believe I'd do anything for you," Scott continued, getting more excited, "So I'll prove it."
"Oh yeah? You're gonna hide us under your bed 'til the Harpies leave and we have camp to ourselves?"
"Better. I'm going to get us permission to stay from Derek."
"Oh yeah, rules are the priority."
"But since when were rules priority for Scott McCall?"
"They're only priority when he can bat his eyelashes seductively at Derek and get whatever he wants."
"Oh please," Scott rolled his eyes. "It's not going to be that easy this time. You know how Derek is about this stuff."
"Oh you mean the same way Stiles is about his promises? He worships them and will never break them?" Lydia quipped sarcastically.
"Enough Lydia I didn't prank your stupid cabin," he growled as she narrowed her eyes at him.
"I have no idea what you're talking about but we can go with that I guess."
"Aw Stiles you didn't tell Scott?"
"Lydia don't you dare..," he said in response though his tone was clearly one of resignation. Fine, tell them, but this doesn't leave this place," he indicated with a noncommittal wave of his hand.
"Oh like your inflated ego doesn't leave your big head?"
"Lia!"
"Sorry," Malia grinned, having the audacity to not look even slightly regretful, sending Allison into a fit of laughter that only ceased after Stiles threw her a dark look and Isaac was forced to clamp his hand over her mouth.
"Basically the only reason Stiles has been getting better at fighting is because I've been training him."
"Oh, I'm sorry..," Liam contributed for the first time, looking around with a smirk on his face. "I didn't know there was someone that wasn't aware of that."
"Liam. As I constantly love to repeat. Why are you here?" Stiles tried to butt in, only for his words to be drowned out by the open laughter that rang out. "Oh wow guys, real nice."
Only Malia looked slightly surprised but that could probably be attributed to the fact that until a few days ago all she could think about was Stiles eyes. Now however, all she was thinking about was Kira's black licorice ones. And she was frustrated.
As fragments of conversation drifted on, the only thing each of them felt was an undeniable sense of belonging.
"Whatever, but if I die on my next quest you guys are lighting my shroud."
"No we'll be sinking you to the bottom of the Hudson- it's just an hour away."
"Stiles!"
