The Impervious

Chapter 3

"Where are you?", said Veronica "I've  called you like a million times already. Eleri is..."
"Eleri?! Is she ok? Did she tumble over the stairs again? Oh god I knew she would end up doing something stupid. She is just so restless-"
"Woah! Take a break. She's OK. As cold as the sun is though. Better be back if you want your life to be safe. She's been acting way too frantic".
Veronica wasn't sure but she did hear a hint of sigh. "I'm- I'm caught up in an important meeting", Austin said reforming his compose.
"Why don't you just tell her?"
"No Veronica, no. I can't let anyone get close to her. It has to kept from her". He was agitated just by the thought of letting it out. He cut the phone and tossed it beide on the sofa.

She was there plying the piano with joy. Her eyes shined like a million stars. There she was again in the garden and him trying to chase her, escaping smoothly like silk between his fingers. He was sitting with her on the roof watching fireworks light up the sky. The way her presence had ignited his soul. He turned to look at her. Something wasn't right. She was fading.
"Don't let go of me Etu", she said looking at him with hope. "Never", he replied but deep down he knew something ain't right. She was disappearing. Everything was fading out of existence. He looked around. He looked around in frustration. She was gone. He was alone. Lonely in a deep dark place. There was nothing but killing silence and sword of  emptiness stabbed in his heart brutally. Helpless and worn out wry.

Austin opened his eyes. A similar view of his office filled him.
"Are you alright sir?", a woman in formal attire asked him.
He touched his forehead and realized he was perspirating badly. He took the glass of water kept on the desk and splashed it on his face.
What is happening to me? Why is this back?
The woman was now bewildered by the sudden lunacy. Austin took few deep breaths and stood up. He had never felt this weak. He picked up his coat and said, "Cancel the meeting".

"You're back soon. Didn't expect you this early", Veronica said but Austin seemed unwilling to indulge in the conversation. He was disturbed. Veronica figured it out in an instant and knew what he wanted to hear. She had known him so well from so long.
"She was really worried about you being late. Go check on her at once".
He slowly made his way to the room. All this looked familiar. Like a deja vù. He tried to think of an explanation but just gave up. He couldn't think properly.  He wasn't even in a state to explain himself. He opened the door. It clicked and the stuffy air indicated him that it had been locked for a while.
The darkness suddenly reminded him of the experience he had had earlier and switched on the light instantly. The soft glow of the lamp filled the room. Eleri was sleeping on the sofa.

She must've fallen asleep waiting.

She looked so divine like an angel. He slowly carried her in his arms. She somehow felt incredibly light. He put her in the bed and making sure that she was comfortable he turned to leave. He stopped and looked at her. He walked closer to the bed and whispered, "I'm sorry". He sat there for some time soothing her hand, wanting to stay. He turned to leave again but he couldn't. Eleri had grasped in had tight.
Oh really! What is she a baby?
He wondered but then decided not to abandon her until she herself wanted him to.
He sat there just looking her sleep for hours and just before sleeping he muttered half awake, " I'm not going to let go of you. Never."
