Days Gone By

Day 5

General P.O.V

Rose wakes up, laying in bed for a few minutes before she remembers it's her best friend's birthday, despite the fact it's barely light outside. Staying quiet, she stands up and starts searching for a mud cake and some blue candles, she also gets a lighter and three plastic plates.

Once she finds a nice looking cake, she puts 22 candles in the icing, lighting them all before she walks back to the girls, cake in hand. She sits it down on the cold fire pit before gently waking the girls.

Once they're both properly awake, Rose and Larissa sing happy birthday before Jade blows the candles out and uses one of the kitchen knives to cut the cake up after removing the candles, she then puts a slice on each plate.

Grinning, all three girls eat their cake as they watch the sun come up through the dark curtains.

Rose's P.O.V

"Today's going to be a good day." I grin and look at Jade, the cake demolished and all cleaned up.

"Hopefully. Hey, how old are you?" Larissa looks over at Jade who beams.

"22." I giggle at how proud she looks and I shake my head, getting up and kissing her head before I walk to one of the windows, looking out into the still empty street.

General P.O.V

The girls stay inside for Jade's birthday, sorting out the shop and moving as much stuff in front of the glass windows as possible before Jade finds the freezer and points it out, the girls then search the big freezer.

The girls spend a few hours clearing out boxes from the freezer, placing them against the Windows they then fill it with meat and dairy products, as its still very much cold.

After a while of cleaning Jade hears a ruckus outside the store and she rushes over to Larissa and Rose by the fire pit and they go to help, killing a few zombies each before they realised they've rescued a guy, around their age, two male teenage twins, around 18, and their little sister who looks very young and scared, around 11.

"Hey, I'm Rose. This is Jade and that's Larissa. We are currently held up in this store.. You guys seem to be in rough shape.. You can stay with us if you'd like? I know we'd feel safer with larger numbers.." Rose speaks softly, hoping to convince them that they should stay. As she looks up, her eyes meet Jared's lime green ones.

"I'm Jared, those two are Oscar, he's the blonde one with green eyes and Ashford is the one with brown eyes. You can tell them apart by their hair and voices. Basically Oscar has short hair with a higher pitch voice and Ashford has near shoulder length hair and a deeper voice. And this little one is Rickie." After a bit of hesitation, Rickie smiles and they bring them in and get them a double bed for the oldest and youngest and two single beds for the twins.

Rose moves her bed next to Jade's, to make a double bed and they move theirs so one of the top corners is touching Larissa's, creating enough room for the double bed and two other singles to be placed around the fire pit in a hexagonal-type shape.

"So how'd you guys find yourselves here?" Jade looks over at the twins then to the eldest. They each share looks before deciding to share their story whilst Larissa cooks up some chicken and Rose and Jade cut up some tomato and lettuce, putting them in a bowl. Oscar tells them how Jared came home from work to the twins trying to calm down their little sister.

He asked what was going on and she said that she watched her math teacher kill multiple of her students and she ran home alone. Jared then explains, whilst holding a crying Rickie, that they've been walking for 2 days straight through the night.

Jade then asks where they've come from and Oscar explains that they're from Nambour, which is about half an hour away from Morayfield, where the girls are.

Rose tells them hers and Jade's story before Larissa tells her and they all eat some chicken breast and lettuce and tomato salad.

Rose and Jared go looking for bed sheets, blankets and pillows for their beds, not talking whilst they get a green sheet for the double bed and a big fluffy blue blanket with two fluffy pillows. For the twins they get black sheets with matching blue blankets before they take them back and Jade helps the twins make their beds as Rose helps Rickie make hers and Jareds, Jared busy collecting some water bottles for them all.

Rickie gets upset as she sits under the blanket, staring at her hands as Jared gets under the blanket and tries to convince Rickie to lay down and fall asleep.

"Jared..? Can you sing for me..?" Rickie whispers as she looks down at him, the rest of the group all turn in for the night, Rose being kept awake by Rickie's subtle sobbing as Jared gently sings her a nursery rhyme, holding her close as he rubs her back until Rickie cries herself to sleep and Rose is left staring at the dark roof in silence.

"You still awake?" She hears Jared's deep voice and sits up, the dimmed light of the fire just illuminating his silhouette leaning against a near by shelf.

"Yeah.. Dunno why though." Rose murmurs quietly as she stands up, crossing her bare arms over her chest, walking down a few aisles to the clothing.

"This place has everything, doesn't it..?" Jared looks around as he hides behind a rack and changes into sweats and a tank top, Rose leaves her clothes on, pulling on a clean pair of socks and a huge no-zip hoodie.

"Yeah.. I worked here with Larissa before this all happened." She waits for him to finish before leaning against the rack beside him. Jared looks over at her and runs a hand through his medium length dark brown hair.

"You live near by?" He sits on a nearby seat, Rose sits beside him, one leg beneath her and the other against her chest.

"Yeah.. The apartment block about half an hour away." She nods her head back and Jared nods, yawning before he leans back.

"You and Jade seem close.. Friends before all this went down?" He looks over at Rose and she once again nods.

"Best friends since prep." She grins and looks back at him, mimicking his yawn.

They stay quiet for a while before Jared notices that Rose has drifted off. He gently rubs her arm.

"Rose, c'mon. Let's get you to bed." She grunts but doesn't move and he smirks, very gently lifting her up bridal style and he carries her back to her bed, laying her down and pulling the blanket over her before he himself lays down with Rickie.

He kisses Rickie's forehead before he drifts off, the sound of 3 different people snoring seemingly echoing throughout the store as they all sleep soundly.
