Sam, or uncle Sam, was Hanna's brother. He was a man in his late 40s, who lived with his wife Amber, and his four children. He had twins, two five year olds- Max and Cheryl, an eighteen year old-Justin, and a nineteen year old - Mark, who was adopted.
Mark, was also known as Madilyn's best friend, and uncle Sam, was known for his love of food, which resulted in his chubbiness. He loved all of the kids, and the kids loved him... and his moustache.
They were sitting at the table, having dinner.
At the head of the table was uncle Sam. On his left his sister Hanna, and on his right was Adrian. Sitting next to Adrian, was his fiancée Jennifer, and at the end of their side of the table, was Zara. On the other side, sitting next to their mother was aunt Amber, next to her was their oldest son Justin, with Madilyn sitting across Zara, and next to Mark.
They left the twins at home with their nanny.
They were the epitomy of a 'disfynctional, but we'll make it through' family.
"Well, you're finally home Adrian. Even if it's just for a week. Welcome back, my boy. We missed you." Uncle Sam started the conversation, while patting Adrian's shoulder.
"It's good to be back, uncle Sam. I missed you too. All of you." He looked around the table and offered everyone a smile.
"Adrian, honey, are you eating well there, are you sleeping enough?" Their aunt chipped in. But before he could answer, her husband interrupted her.
"Amber, love, I'm sure he is. He is a 23 year old male, not a kid. He knows how to take care of himself." He picked up another slice of food. " I mean, if Hanna isn't worried about him." The sentence was interrupted by him chewing his food.
"I know, but he'll always be a child to us." She smiled motherly.
"And now everyone can see what my life is like." Justin remarked annoyingly.
"Oh, shut up Justin, you're not the only one. We all live under her reign." Mark joked.
"Anyway, Adrian, important stuff now, " He swallowed the last piece of his stake. " You still haven't told us about Jennifer." He offered her a smile, which he probably thought was a warm and welcoming one, but actually came off as creepy.
"How did you meet THIS gorgeous woman, ", he pointed at her with the end of his knife, " And how did you get her to stay with you? Tell me, you didn't break any law or something like that?" He nudged him to the side, causing Jennfier to blush.
"No, uncle," he laughed. '' Nothing like that. We met at a charity event. Jennifer, " He put his arm around her, " is a model , and her agency was doing a fashion show, for the charity that our club was sponsoring. "
"Well, you did well above your waist, eh?"
Madilyn rolled her eyes. She has been silent this whole time, trying to block out this conversation, focusing on her food.
Their uncle continued. "Also, why did you leave us earlier then it was planned? Did it have something to do with that Caroline girl, oh, she was so clingy that girl?"
"Sam, she was a sweet girl. " Hanna joined the conversation. "Poor girl, she was so devastated when they broke up. But yeah, she WAS clingy, wasn't she?"
"No, uncle. It had nothing to do with it, that story ended long before I ..."
"Fucked my friend." Madilyne cut him off, causing the room to go quiet.
Finally, Adrian looked at her. For the first time since they sat at the table.
Her eyes were glued to her food she was using as a prop.
"Madilyn, language!"
"What, mother? I'm eighteen years old, I think I'm old enough to say the F world," She snapped at her mother.
"And, that still doesn't change the fact that you, " she pauzed, stopped herself from saying the f word, " had sex with my best friend."
His face was stiff, and his eyes still fixed on Madilyn.
That look, that look that would fill her with fear, fear and excitement.
"Is this true Adrian?" Their mother spoke softly.
"Unfortunately it is, mother. But, " he sighed, "it was a long time ago, and it was a mistake, a mistake I wish I hadn't made." He was getting angry, by the end of it.
"Wait, what?" Zara, joined in. "Maddy, are you talking about Amelia? He had sex with Amelia ?! Wow, I mean I knew that girl was in love with him, but I thought she knew that the best friend's brother is always off the limits. That sneaky little b..."
Her mother stopped her from finishing the sentence. "Zara, don't add to this circus, you are at least the responsible one her!"
She mouthed 'Sorry.'
"Talk about a back stab." Justin grinned.
"Justin, shut it!" Adrian raised his voice, but still not breaking off his eye contact with Madilyn. Then he directed his question to her. "How long have you known?"
"She told me a month ago." She shrugged. "But, the little detail that I looooved the most about that event, is that you fucked her right after you beat the shit out of Kyle! " Now, she raised her voice at him. "Now what gives you the right to fuck up everything around me, huh?! ''
"Who is Kyle?" The question that came from Jennifer, and wasn't directed at anyone in particular, but Mark was the one to answer it.
"Madeline's then, and now ex boyfriend." He whispered it to her, even though he was far away from her.
"Kyle?!" He laughed sardonically. "That little prick?! If I could, I'd beat the shit out him again!"
"Oh, and if I may ask why?! " Her voice was dripping with sarcasm.
"Because he's an idiot, who can't keep his hands to himself." He answered firmly.
She stood up, making the chair screech.
"Yes, but that little prick was MY BOYFRIEND, and his hands WERE supposed to be on ME!!!"
"Madilyn." His tone was fatherly. Like he was warning her right before he grounds her. She ignored him.
"And the fucking hypocrisy of it all, is that YOU can do whatever you want! YOU have the right to do whatever you want, or DO whomever you want, but I can't! "
"Madilyn!" He repeated her name more firmly, on the verge of yelling.
"What??!" She screamed.
"Stop it." His voice was sharp.
A pause.
They kept looking at eachother, without saying anything.
She spoke first, mockingly.
"Why should I? I'm angry, and I'm expressing my emotions. Don't you all always tell me I should do that? Well, now I am. Besides, I think Jennifer should know what she's getting herself into."
Everyone, turned their heads to Jennifer, who looked like she was waiting for the ground to swallow her up.
"That's enough!" He stood up.
"Oh, don't bother. I'm going." She passed her chair, and headed to her room. After a couple of seconds, Justin stood up to follow her.
"Sit your ass down!" Adrian commanded. He did.
Zara went after her.
"Ok, then. More wine? Anyone?"
Ah. Uncle Sam. The bomb defuser.
