I feel the smooth hard wood under my knuckles as I knock on the door. Lily's tall three story house with black chipped paint and bullet holes stands before me. I take a step back from the door looking at the dirt and gravel road. No other houses line the street. I rock back on my heels at I wait for the door to be open.
I hear the scratchy voice of Lily's mom "What?"
I turn around and look at her. She leans against the door frame covering her eyes from the sun. An empty liquor bottle in her left hand.
"What do you want?" I gag at the pungent smell of alcohol.
"Is Lily here?"
"Yes." a look of disgust covers her face.
"Thank you." I push past her and start up the stairs. I hear the door slam shut. I jump and turn around on the sound.
"You wanna see her?" her eyes widen with fear.
"Yeah," I continue up the stairs, rolling my eyes at her. "Why else would I be here, it's not like I wanna see you."
"You can't s-see her" I wave my hand in the air, signaling that I don't care. I turn the corner at the top of the stairs.
"Why?"
"She, she." I make my way to the third door on the left. I hear her mom stumbling up the stairs. I knock three times. No answer. I crack open the door. "Lily?"
"Help?" I hear a muffled voice say.
"Lily, where are you?"
"Help." I open the door all the way to see lily thrashing on her bed.
"I said stop!" I jump at the sound of Lily's mom's voice. I stare at Lily as she starts foaming at the mouth. I take deep breaths, trying not to vomit. After about thirty seconds she stops thrashing but still foaming at the mouth. Panic runs through her eyes. She looks at me. "Help." she says, more foam coming out.
I feel tears well up in my eyes. I reach forword but don't move because of Lily's mom. "Hel-" she tries to finish but as the foam turns to blood and her chest slowly stops she has no choice but to close her eyes and surrender her life. I let out a scream and fall to my knees, tear streaming down my face. I hear a click of a trigger. I feel a gun pushed up to my temple. More tears fall down. Please don't kill me. Please don't die. I close my eyes and wish for the best, to meet Lily in a different life. I hear a large thud and feel the ground shake. I open one eye and turn around to see Lily's mom passed out, drunk on the floor. I stare at her for a little bit before crawling into a ball, crying myself to sleep.
"Please, you have to believe me."
"Tell me again what happened that night."
"I walked into the house and I smelled alcohol on her mom," I scratched my wrist where the handcuffs has been, a small bruise beginning. "I walked up stairs, heading to Lily's room. She was crying for help so I went into the room and saw her die. Her mom held a gun up to my head before passing out from alcohol."
"Uh-Hu."
"That's it." he stares at me a blank expression on his face. "You have to believe me, sir."
"I do."
"No, you don't I can hear it in your voice. You doubt me just like the other officer." I rub my wrists again, flinching at the pain. I rub harder as he talks again. "Ma'am, please stop."
"What? Stop what, telling you the truth." I feel a cold drop on my thigh. Than two more. I look down. Three little drops of a dark red liquid mold together of my pants. Four more drop down as I rub them off my pants. I feel a sharp pain. I was still rubbing my wrist. I rubbed my wrist so hard and so fast that a small cut that was producing blood had begun. He reaches over and blots it with a towel, placing a medium sized band-aid after all the blood is gone. "I Really do believe you."
