Three hours had passed and, yet, there was still no sign of Kenzie. No trace of her was found in the hallways, no sounds came from the toilets, and her locker hadn't been ransacked. The signature shimmering, silver braids were nowhere in sight and for once Ariana became apprehensive for her friend.
What if she's been kidnapped?
Ariana reckoned her cynical thoughts weren't exactly going to calm her nerves and in a lame attempt at trying to rule out the idea, she split open an egg and watched carelessly as the amber egg yolk fell into the mixing bowl. It was a drag, baking that is, but it did rid her mind of treacherous scenarios.
Ariana should have apprehended the concept of following her friend out of the cafeteria but had been too caught up in conversing with strangers to even pay attention to her best friend. Ariana's shoulders shuddered as she recollected her behaviour in front of Ryder Valentine. She had acted like a complete ditz, falling all over the place and questioning him like a convicted criminal.
You did have the right, a small voice called out from the back of her mind. Ariana reasoned with it. Kenzie was looking for the boy called Nathaniel- or as he had been referred to as Nate- and Ryder was supposedly his 'buddy' but according to Ryder a MacKenzie Adams did not exist. The whole scheme did not make much sense to her, and for once in her life there seemed to be some sort of mystery taking place. It wasn't everyday your best friend lies about knowing two bewitching young gentlemen.
Mesmerized by her own thoughts, a loud thump! Caused Ariana to suddenly revert back to reality. The egg shell was crushed in her right hand, and slimy streaks were dripping down her arms and onto the wooden floors. Blinking she looked up and saw her Home Economics teacher billowing in front of her. Mrs Hallows glared from under her large, long lashes and pursed her glossy lips at Ariana, drumming her fingers against the cooking desk.
"I see you have finally mastered the arts of cracking an egg, Miss Hunter?" The teacher asked her tongue curling as she finished.
Ariana gulped and quickly placed down her arm and rested it against the baking table. Praying her face wasn't resembling a tomato, she forced herself to speak.
"Yes Miss, sorry I just got distracted for a moment." Ariana replied gritting her teeth.
Mrs Hallows turned her nose up at her. "Excuses, excuses... But, my dear, I would extremely appreciate if you could clean up your mess as the class is nearly complete. As you can see, most of the students have already put their muffins in the oven."
Mrs Hallows swiped her fingers around the room, showing Ariana that, in deed, everyone was finished. Ariana swallowed loudly and looked at her estranged teacher blankly.
"Again, I'm sorry. It's just I don't have a partner with me today and-" Ariana was stopped abruptly when the door of the class room was opened and Nathaniel Sinclair waltzed in.
Ariana's eyes narrowed as the cocky phantom lazily stumbled his way inside. Mrs Hallowed turned her attention away from Ariana and soon all focus was on the (late) newcomer.
"And who might this be!" Mrs Hallows declared enthusiastically, clearly ecstatic about a new student on whom she could manipulate-or turn into her new baking prodigy.
Nathaniel smirked and caught eyes with Ariana but quickly diverted his gaze. A cold shudder ran through Ariana's bones and she rubbed her arms vigorously.
