Mommy isn't gonna be back. I am old enough to understand what dying is. To understand murder. At least enough to know that the man who shot her did a murder. I'm only nine years old now, and I'm already without parents. I kneeled next to Mommy and wiped the blood from her neck. She doesn't look nice with the blood all over her. Mommy was the only one who loved me and now she was gone. All because of the army man. Why did he even come to our house in the first place? Isn't he meant to be fighting bad guys or being nice to old people? Not shooting Mommies...Before I know it I'm crying. I brush my hair through Mommy's hair and I know why I'm crying. I will never see her again. I jump up as I hear footsteps approaching me. I look up and see three more army men, one with a big dog, maybe a German Shepherd. One of the men press a button on their radio, and whisper, "We've got the kid, he's a super." He doesn't know I heard him. I back into the corner of the room slowly. Maybe they won't see me. The army men spread out a bit, and press me further into the corner. I start to sprint as fast as I can, just like Mommy told me not to. Sorry, Mommy, but I'm really scared. As I began to run, I hear a different man yell, "HE'S A SUPER, CATCH HIM!" Dumb army men, you can't catch me, even if you've got a car. Mom told me I could run faster than most vehicles. I look over my shoulder and see the men running after me. I speed up, but between my legs is starting to get really hot and painful. I turn quickly in to an open alleyway and fall down. The army men and their dog run by the alley, obviously not noticing that I had turned. I pushed myself up against a wall, letting my breathing become normal again. "Who are you?" The voice makes me jump. I turn to face the person who spoke. It's a girl, probably a teenager. "Who are you?" She asks again, a bit louder this time. "I'm Robbie," I whisper meekly, "who are you?" The girl smiles a bit. I think she knew she was scaring me. "My name is Kendra. Are you ok?" I feel a tear running down my face. She puts her her hands on my cheeks and makes me look at her. "Hey, buddy, what's ever wrong, you can tell me. Those bad guys are chasing me too. I look at her, trying to stop crying. Kendra has green eyes, just like Mommy. "Why do the army men want to take you?" I whispered to her. Kendra smiled patiently. "Because I'm like you. I saw you running. Your fast. Those men chase me, because no matter how hard you hit me, I won't get hurt." Liar. She's probably a bad guy, just like those army men. When she gets the chance she'll kill me. I'm leaving. I'm not letting anyone hurt me this time. As I stand up, Kendra says, "I can help you, you know." I turn to face her again. "How?" Kendra stands up and runs her hand through my curly hair. "Well, at the carnival tomorrow night their having a talent show. You're coming with me." Kendra is crazy, isn't she? The only one who wants to help me is crazy..."We don't have talents. If we show them what we can do, they'll shoot us." Kendra laughed. Her laugh is pretty, but I'm no sure why she is laughing. I am telling the truth. "Buddy, we're not going to do any talents. We are going to recruit supers." She is DEFINITELY crazy. If we get shot at for being a super at our home, what will happen if we ask for people to stand out and join us? "That's really dangerous you know." Kendra laughs again. "Danger? Danger isn't a word where I come from. Your smart for a kid. We should stick together. Your speed, and my invincibility, we could be real good together, you know." Kendra wanted to be friends with me. Now I get it. Mommy is gone. Nobody can take care of me. But, just maybe, Kendra can help me. I look up at her dirty freckled face. She has been on her own for awhile, her clothes are torn, her hair is messy. "Ok. I can help you look nice maybe. Like some food and a shower?" Kendra smiles. "Sure kid, who do we have to rob?" I laugh. I shouldn't be. Mommy is gone. "Follow me, I live close." The moment I turn the corner I realize how quickly I had ran. I was running for about twenty seconds, but I couldn't even see my house, no matter how hard I looked. I began to walk to my house, hoping Kendra wouldn't notice how far I actually ran. "You can really run, can't you?" Dang it. I just nodded, and kept walking. When we finally reached home, I opened the door and walked inside. She was gone. They took Mommy. I didn't show any emotion. Kendra has already seen me as weak enough. "Nice place," Kendra says impressed, "you live here alone, little guy?" "Yea, my mom left a while back. Her old clothes are in the room down the hall. There is a bathroom in there too." Kendra leaves the room, and I hear a door shut and the faucet turn. Maybe Kendra would want to live here, maybe she will want to be my new mommy. I don't want a new mommy, though. Maybe a big sister? Whatever Kendra thinks of me, we are going to meet more supers tomorrow night, even if it kills us.
