The next morning, Kayciance and I walked to breakfast together.

“Alright, so my plan is to break out tomorrow. Early morning.” Kayciance explained.

“Fine, but I’ll have to do some work today.”

“What work? We don’t have work!”

      “But I do.”

We kept walking down the hallway.

“My work is to do a little research and get our orphanage records. Who knows, maybe we can find something.”

“You know I only want to find my identity and get out of this place, right?”

“Yes, but this is important. They could use the records to track us, and we need to do some research. Maybe we have to go back to olden times…as in look in books and look at super old history.”

      “You’re a nerd.”

“Alright then. But I’m doing this just because I want to get out too.”

I was actually really scared. I didn’t know if I could get out without getting killed.

“Look, I’m going to go and get started while you can go off to breakfast, alright?”

“Fine. But if you ever need me…” she trailed off and kept walking.

      Girls annoy me.

I knew that the headmistress would be at breakfast making morning announcements, so I knew it would be the perfect time to go in her office. I walked down the hallway, took a right, took a left and another right again.

I was shaking and trembling. I was so nervous that I would mess up and get my cover blown and I’d be stuck in the prison room. I contemplated the thought the whole time walking down the hallway. I didn’t care if I crashed into anything, but I had something to do.

It was confusing for my sake, but once I had made it to the door, my hand grasped the cold brass knob. I could imagine a group of people watching me, and I started to sweat. Their eyes following my every move, as I turn the knob. I could imagine the door flying open and my eyes meeting two large and glowing eyes surrounded by darkness. With a growl, the creature in the dark lunged at me, tackling me, and with the creature’s mighty claws, it tearing at my raw flesh as I howled in pain.

But of course, my imagination runs wild and I tend to over-react to things like that. So, I try to calm myself down and think. I need to find the records with Kayciance’s parents’ names and her real name. It’s a wonder how I’ve never seen files of my past any time of my life, being fourteen years old. Not one of those 5,244 days that I’ve lived for all my life, I’ve never known.

Finally, after holding the knob for a long amount of time, I twist it and yank the door open. Alright, no creature lunging out at me and the room is bright. That’s a good start.

I walked in and took a quick glance at everything. Where could our records be? After a quick search, I went to the next stage: opening drawers. Of course, to be extremely stealthy, I brought gloves. It was cold outside today, and I am so glad I brought them. I went to the headmistress’ desk and opened the first and top drawer on the left. There was a photo of a goose and a photo of an ostrich. I opened the next drawer. Empty. I opened the next drawer. Empty again. I tried the large middle drawer. It had her communication device and supercomputer stored in it. I tried the right side. Still empty. That was weird....most of the drawers are empty. I tried the fifth drawer of her desk. Two photos of a nightingale and an eagle. Then, finally, I tried the last drawer. Nothing.
