Eavesdropping from the end of the hallway, Kayciance demanded, “Castellan, come with me. Now.”
“Alright, alright!” Castellan threw up his hands and followed her.
We walked down the hallway and to my room. I first questioned why we were planning to go to my room, but I simply decided to stay quiet.
Endlessly rambling, Castellan blabbered about all that went through his brain and how nervous he was. It was getting to me, and I was getting nervous too.
We had reached the chamber of doom, and we sat Castellan down on my bed with Kayciance and I standing side by side in front of him.
“Castellan,” I exclaimed, “I know how you are part of the drones, but will you give it a break? I’m tired of your idle ‘chit-chat.’ Listen to me. You need to work with us.”
He stared at the floor and dangled his feet off the bench.
Startling him, she began to yell at Castellan, “don’t you realize? We live in shacks and nothing’s good anymore!”
He said nothing. I think this was the only time that he had stopped talking for his whole life.
I interjected, “What’s going on and why are you here?”
“I- I- I started a rumor about Demetri to get the attention of my group. Also, about trying to get you onto my former group, I’m sorry about that, Quintus. I thought that I could do one last deed before I left. I just realized what I have done and I feel really bad. I’ve had different thoughts lately and the drones have been shunning me. I mean, I’ve been realizing their bad attitude and everything about them that I haven’t realized before.”
Kayciance interjected, “Really? Oh, so you just realized that?!”
I replied, “Let him finish.”
Castellan took a deep breath and continued. “I had an epiphany, and they kicked me out. Therefore, I’m now with you two. I feel really, really bad about Demetri’s murder. It’s my entire fault. I only wanted attention, but I took it too far and it ended up killing someone that was actually nice to us, and I never had been appreciative of his work. There’s nothing good about this place anymore!”
He threw up his hands in disgust. “I think I got enough attention from everyone because the drones know how I said that rumor and they spread it around. Now they’re gossiping about me, like how I did with you. I’m so sorry. I know how you guys feel.”
He leaned in for an embrace but Kayciance and I both backed away. He gave us a weird look and asked, “So…can I be friends with you guys?”
“No.”
“Kayciance!” I exclaimed.
“Alright, fine!”
Gratefully, Castellan exclaimed, “Thank you so much! I won’t let you down! I have to go, and I’ll see you all later!”
After he left, Kayciance pointed out, “he may be a worthy addition to the two of us. Perhaps he will prove himself useful to our break out. He’ll provide great entertainment.”
