"Huh? What do you mean she ran away?" Kousei angrily asked the doctor, who stood with shame in front of the boy.
"I'm afraid she left when the nurse went out to get her medication. Nobody saw her leave. She just... disappeared."
How could a doctor let this happen? It's his job to keep things like this from happening.
Kousei's face started to turn red. He picked his bag up and stormed out of the room. He tried calling Kaori for the millionth time, but she won't pick up. The young pianist was in shock. Kousei had gone to Kaori's hospital room, worried about the condition Kaori is in, when he saw that the bed was empty. He just stood there, unable to comprehend what happened, and stared at the white blankets that fell into a heap on the tiled floor.
'What am I supposed to do? Her condition will surely get worse without the medicine. She might get into an accident, especially since she can't walk well anymore. I need to find her,' Kousei thought as he walked out of the big glass doors of the hospital. He imagined his golden haired friend walking along the side of the road, feeling dizzy. Collapsing on the road. And then...
No, Kousei! Now is not the time! We need to find her and bring her back.
He searched high and low. Looked in every place they had ever gone to. He looked in the place where she performed in front of hundreds of people. He looked in the park where they first met. He looked at school. He looked in her parent's bakery. He looked everywhere. But she was nowhere to be found.
Kousei collapsed on a bench in the park. He was worried sick. Where is she? Is she okay? He wiped off the sweat on his forehead and got up. Kousei quickly walked along the streets of the city.
He stopped in his tracks when he heard a female voice crying in a dark alley.
Wait... could it be?!
Kousei dashed into the alley, his bag bouncing against his back as he searched for the voice. When he turned the corner, his blue eyes met another darker pair of blue eyes staring back at him. The girl laid back against an old brick wall. Her wheel chair stood beside her, looking as if it had toppled over. She looked at him in shock as she turned away from him, and she made sure her blond hair was hiding her face.
Kousei rushed over.
"Are you nuts?! Why did you run away? Are you hur-" His words were disrupted by her wrapping her thin arms around his waist.
"H-Hey! What are you-" "Shhh..." Kaori placed her finger on his lips. Kousei, who wasn't used to her touching him so affectionately like this, was turning red. Being so close to Kaori made his heart pound like crazy.
He was red, but not because he was angry like earlier. He was happy. Happy because Kaori is safe and unharmed.
He sighed. "Okay, we need to go back to the hospital." He was about to pick her up to put her in the wheel chair when she suddenly yelled.
"NO! Don't take me back there. I can't stand it!" She clenched on tightly to Kousei's shirt, refusing to let go. "Just let me stay here for a while. I'm not ready to go back." Kousei pondered for a while, and finally agreed to Kaori's request. It was when he sat down beside her and looked at her face that he realized Kaori had been crying for a long time. Her eyes were red and puffy, and her cheeks were still wet. Sensing that he was looking at her face, Kaori immediately wiped away her tears and let out a sigh.
"You wanna know why I ran away?" She asked. Kousei looked at her in curiosity and slowly nodded. "I heard the doctors say that I need to undergo surgery, and there isn't a big chance that I'll survive. I don't want to stay there, knowing I might die so soon. I want to live! I want to be able to graduate, and play violin for a big crowd all the time, and so many other things. But I don't have much time left, Kousei!" Her tears came back again. Kaori put her head in her hands and started sobbing. Kousei put his arms around her.
"I know. How about you just make the most out of the time you have left? I'll join you." Kousei said.
"Really?" Kaori looked up to him, tears glistening in her blue eyes.
"Yup," He smiled. "I'll stay beside you. Forever," He said with determination. She gave him a weak smile and fell asleep in his arms.
He put the wheelchair in the right position and was about to put Kaori in it when he realized the wheels were broken.
"Huh? How am I supossed to bring her back now?!" He had an idea. He tried carrying Kaori on his back, but she kept sliding off. He finally decided to carry her bridal style back to the hospital. While walking back, Kaori started mumbling in her sleep.
"K-Kousei."
Kousei blushed. Did she just say his name in her sleep?! She said it in such a cute way, too!
