Tyler smiled at Josh, linking their fingers and they caught the breeze. They'd come home after their "double" date, and immediately changed and gone to the park. Tyler had grabbed his ukulele, simply explaining that he wanted to play something for Josh.
So they sat, legs dangling from their spot on the top of the vacant playground equipment. Tyler's fingers strummed gingerly, plucking at the strings momentarily as he tried to work himself up for what was coming.
"You've really changed a lot of stuff," Tyler muttered, eyes watering a bit as he thought of all the events that had passed. It all seemed so short and minuscule, yet it had been over a month. Over a month since Tyler had been selectively mute, closed in, terrified... Over a month since Tyler had began to live. "For me, I mean..."
"In a good way or bad way?" Josh inquired, making Tyler just grin.
"A terrible way, Joshua Dun."
"Thought so," the other joked, smiling like a complete idiot as he leaned back. He took a deep breath and sighed in contentment, unaware of Tyler's loving eyes glued to his figure.
"I remember being terrified of speaking."
"I remember that, too," Josh nodded, opening one eye and tilting his head to Tyler. "Now I can't shut you up."
"Rude," Tyler tutted, laughing a tad afterward to show that he wasn't really offended. "But yeah, you remember like..."
Josh stared at Tyler while he spoke. The way his lips pulled back, the way that he grinned and his eyes darted around the park as he spoke. He watched as he recounted the day not so long ago that Josh confessed his feelings, making Tyler's eyes land on the swings with some sort of fondness.
Josh remembers the hurt and bitterness toward himself and all the pain ensuing in days thereafter. Even when Tyler had admit his own feelings, even when Tyler had kissed Josh, it still felt surreal; like maybe Tyler was lying to Josh and giving him pity. Deep down he knew that wasn't the case, but he couldn't help but feeling that way.
Tyler paused, taking a deep breath and turning to face Josh now. He clutched onto his ukulele, eyebrows furrowed with some sort of uncertainty as he watched his boyfriend and tried to prepare himself. For what, Josh didn't know, but Tyler did.
"You remember when I got beat up? The first time, I mean," Tyler clarified, making Josh chuckle.
"I do." Something told him that wouldn't be the only time he'd say those words to Tyler.
"Remember what I said in the bathroom?"
Josh hesitated, head tilting back in thought. "Uh, no... Wait! Yeah, I do. You said you wanted to sing for me."
"Exactly..."
Josh watched as Tyler sighed and strummed at his instrument for a moment, eyes fluttering closed. He opened them again, leaving Josh's heart to leap to his throat in excitement and nervousness. Tyler's speaking voice was beautiful so he didn't doubt that his singing voice would be.
"I never spoke, like I said, because I was nervous," Tyler explained. "There was always this nagging voice in the back of my head telling me that I sounded grotesque and disgusting. But the voice didn't matter once I met you. It was like you made it go away or somethin', I'unno... But I just know that you made me want to speak. I wanted to say so many things to you, and I still do."
"I'm glad I made you feel that way," Josh whispered, biting his lip and kicking his feet around briefly, like a child. "You make me feel important. And happy. Like— I've never had that, y'know?"
