"Under the wide and starry sky
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.This be the verse you grave for me;
"Here he lies where he longed to be,
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill."
— Robert Louis StevensonLetting out a small sigh, Kalani Scarlett closed her leather bound book as she stood up from a wooden chair, pushing it under the table as she reached for her bag.
"Ai terminat?*" A soft voice asked from a few feet away, making Kalani jump in surprise at the unexpected noise.
"Hei, m-ai speriat.*" Kalani replied with an embarrassed laugh, and she rubbed the back of her neck as she smiled. "Yeah, I am."
"Oh, that's good." The voice, which Kalani recognized as her good friend, Malia, smiled kindly at her. "Will we see you tomorrow?"
Kalani thought before she answered. Every other day, Kalani would pack a few books, whether they be textbooks, fiction, or non-fiction, and she would walk to a small bookstore. The store itself was homey and warm looking, giving off an inviting aura to whoever entered. And it always had the sweet smell of lavender and chocolate.
The little bookstore was like a getaway for Kalani. She felt more at home here with Malia than she did at her own apartment. Though, it was understandable. She was almost always here at the store when she as able to be.
"Maybe." Kalani finally answered with a small smile, and she packed her books back into her shoulder bag. "I have to get back, it's almost super time." Just then, Kalani's stomach let out a loud grumble, making her cheeks go a soft pink.
"Okay." Malia laughed softly at the young girl in front of her, and she pulled Kalani into a big hug. "La revedere. Să fie în condiții de siguranță.*"
After a few seconds, Kalani pulled out of the woman's hug, and she waved goodbye as she pushed open the shops door. "Întotdeauna am.*" She replied. "Goodbye."
Stepping out into the chilly air, Kalani stuffed her hands deep into her coats pocket, blowing out a puff of air as she did. She looked to the ground as she walked, to block the cold, but it didn't really work. And even with her face towards the ground, she knew the exact route back to her apartment easily.
The bustling streets and sidewalks echoed with the sound of honking cars and hurrying people as she passed them, and a few meters away, children laughed merrily as they ran around the small playground. A small market was placed a few blocks down, and the warm smell of freshly baked bread filled Kalani's senses. Each time she walked past this particular street, her mind flashed back to the time she was a kid, rushing into the kitchen for some freshly baked cookies and cakes.
