She had curled up into a ball subconsciously, as if to protect herself. She heard the door open but she didn’t move, and then all at once she was pulled into a tight embrace. She opened her eyes and Rachel was stroking her hair and reassuring her. She was so glad that Rachel was there.

Rachel asked what it was she wanted to talk about, she froze. She trusted Rachel and she wanted to tell her, but somehow she couldn’t bring herself to. She started to cry again. She was trying so desperately to keep it together. She felt Rachel’s arm around her again, she knew now that she had started her tears wouldn’t stop falling.

She had no idea how much time had passed since Rachel had arrived but she had finally calmed down enough to stop crying. They sat there in silence for a while; Gina was unsure if she could tell Rachel what had happened without bursting into tears again. Both were waiting for the other to break the eerie silence. Rachel spoke first, after having checked the time. “Gina it’s almost 2:30 you should get some rest, especially since you’ve been ill.” Rachel paused. “Do you mind if I sleep on the sofa? You know it’s late and I don’t really want to travel home…”

“Of course you can. I’ll bring you some pillows and a blanket” Gina replied, glad that the subject had been changed. “I’ll be right back” Gina hurried off to her room.

She returned carrying 2 pillows and 2 blankets; she placed them on the sofa.  “You sure you’ll be alright in here Rach?” Gina enquired

“Yes. I’ll be fine thanks”

Gina turned and began to walk away. “Wait!” Rachel cried

Gina turned back around to face Rachel. “G. If you still want to talk in the morning I have nothing planned all day.”

“Thank you Rach. I’m so sorry about tonight. I wanted to tell you, I just… It’s just that…” Gina trailed off

“Don’t worry about it G. I’m always going to be here for you. I understand that whatever is going on must be difficult for you, I’ve never seen you like this.” Rachel said, sympathetically

“Are you annoyed?” Gina questioned timidly

“No. Not at all! I’m just concerned that’s all.”

Gina sighed, glad that her friend was so supportive. “Night Rach.”

“G’night Gina.”

All the lights were turned off and Gina fell into a deep and peaceful slumber.
