Kakashi dumped his unconscious roommate rather roughly onto his bed. He wrinkled his nose in disgust, Gai reeked of liquor and vomit. His own clothes were tainted by the smell, and Kakashi headed for their bathroom, tugging his clothes off as he went. A few seconds later he was standing in the shower, letting the warm water beat away the dirt and vomit, along with the stress.
Kakashi sighed. He was tired, hungry, and his body ached all over. His legs throbbed with every heartbeat, and the bruises and scrapes he'd collected stung horribly. All in all, it was a cruddy day.
Kakashi turned off the water, stepping out of the steam and into the cold bathroom. He wrapped a towel around his waist, and limped down the hallway to their shared room, leaving small puddles in place of footprints.
Gai was still passed out, lying face down on his bed. Kakashi dressed quietly, slipping into a pair of sweats and a plain white t-shirt. He grabbed his phone off the nightstand, and headed back to the kitchen in search of his book. However, as he sat curled on the couch, all he could think of was Iruka.
His smiling face floated through his mind, his soft brown pony tail and the thick scar across his nose. Hi soft laughter, the gentle way he kissed him, the feel of his hand in Kakashi's.
Kakashi closed the book, and rested his head in his hands. The soft ache he had come to know as loneliness throbbed in his chest. Sure, he had Gai, and his friends from college, but none of them were any replacement for Iruka.
Long distance really did suck.
Kakashi felt a lump forming in his throat, and cursed himself quietly. He shouldn't cry, crying was a sign of weakness and submission. Kakashi wasn't weak. He certainly couldn't let Gai hear him crying, god knows his roommate would make a fuss.
Kakashi fished around for his phone, frantically punching in Iruka's number. He needed to hear his voice. The lump in his throat continued to grow as Iruka's pone rang out.
Dammit, hold it together Kakashi.
He could feel the tears forming in his eyes when Iruka finally answered, mumbling a sleepy hello. Kakashi opened his moth to greet him, maybe crack a joke to cover up his sadness, but all that escaped him was a sob.
"Kakashi?" Iruka whispered from the other line. "Kakashi, what's wrong baby? Why are you crying?" Kakashi choked on his own breath, swallowing hard as he fought for control of his emotions.
"I miss you." He whispered. "I miss you Iruka." Iruka made a soft soothing noise from the other line, a sound that eased a little of the pain in Kakashi's heart.
"Oh Kakashi, I miss you too." Iruka murmured, and Kakashi closed his eyes. "How much longer until your break?"
"About a week." Kakashi muttered. Rubbing his eyes. "Sorry, I just- I needed- I needed to hear your voice." Iruka made another soft noise, and Kakashi smiled a little. He lifted his mask for a moment to wipe his nose, and reached across the couch for a blanket.
"It's alright Kakashi, I'm here now. Is there anything I can do for you to help you feel better?" Kakashi sighed, burying his face in the blankets and breathing slowly.
"I-I dunno." He stammered, his voice barely over a whisper. "I think I just need to sleep, I didn't wake you did I?"
"You did, but it's alright Kakashi, I'm always available if you need me." Kakashi puffed air through his nose.
"Thank you. I'm gonna go to bed now, I love you."
"Love you too Kakashi." The line went quiet, and Kakashi hung up the phone.
A week. One whole week until I can go home to Naruto and Iruka.
Kakashi flopped onto his side, burying his face in the blanket and closing his eyes. It wasn't long before his breathing evened out, and he fell asleep, tears drying on his cheeks.
