Kakashi sat perched on the bed, listening with growing impatience as Naruto's phone rang out.
C'mon kiddo, pick up already.
After a small eternity, there was a click on the other line, and a muffled hello filtered through. Kakashi let out a tiny sigh.
"Hey Naruto, it's me, Kakashi."
"I guessed as much." Naruto's voice was flat, detached. Kakashi winced to himself.
You really nailed it this time Kakashi.
"Look, Naruto-"
"No, stop Kakashi. I know you're busy with classes." Kakashi pinched the bridge of his nose.
"I'm really sorry Naruto, I completely forgot to call you last night. It just slipped my mind." The silence stretched out for a moment longer, and Kakashi's leg bounced nervously.
Damn, he must be pretty upset.
"AHA! Gotcha! You totally thought I was mad at you! Sucker!" Kakashi sat dumbstruck for a moment before laughing along, secretly relieved.
"I'd expect nothing less from you, Naruto." Naruto laughed again, bringing a reluctant smile to Kakashi's face.
"So, anyways." Naruto's tone dropped again, and Kakashi stiffened. "Well, Uhm, you see, there's this... person..." It was Kakashi's turn to laugh, though much gentler.
"Need dating advice again little brother?" Naruto remained silent, and Kakashi chuckled under his breath. "Alright, what's their name?"
"I-I'd rather not say." Kakashi raised his eyebrows silently, but carried on anyways.
"Okay then, what do you need help with?"
"Well, uh, date ideas actually." Kakashi nodded, humming to himself.
"Well the fact that you're putting so much thought into this lets me know that you must really care about this person." Kakashi teased, pulling his legs up onto the bed to sit cross legged.
"Shut it Kakashi. Are you gonna help me or aren't you?"
"Alright alright, now lets see... Well the best advice I can give you is to consider this person's interests, what they like to do, you know? Take them out to do something they enjoy, get to know what makes them happy."
"That's a good point, thanks Kakashi." Kakashi smirked under his mask.
"Am I ever going to find out who this mystery person is?" Kakashi said with a light, teasing tone.
"Stop it, Kakashi." Naruto whined. "Lay off it will ya?" Kakashi laughed again.
"Okay okay, I'm done. Hey, is Iruka there?"
"Oohh, wanna talk to your boyfriend now do you?" Naruto crowed, emphasizing the word boyfriend like a middle schooler would.
"You hypocrite, just answer my question."
"Well, he isn't here. He went to the store to get some stuff for dinner. Hey, Kakashi?" Kakashi frowned at the sudden sad tone.
"Yeah?"
"When are you coming home?" Kakashi sighed, and flopped onto his back, the bed creaking loudly as he did.
"I have a break in about a week, I'll try to get home as soon as possible."
"Alright good, 'cuz Iruka is getting seriously depressed without you here." Kakashi smiled sadly.
"Tell him I love him will you?"
"Sure thing, I gotta go work on my homework Kakashi, I'll talk to you later."
"Alright, bye Naruto." The line went dead, and the dial tone buzzed in Kakashi's ear. Kakashi lay motionless on the bed for a few minutes, listening the the grating sound.
Oh Iruka, I'll try to be home soon. I promise.
