Emma was dragging, she knew it and so did her dad. She didn't want to face her mom. To see the disappointment in her eyes and the anger too.

Five year old Emma sat in her foster mother's closet, hiding. She didn't understand why her foster mother liked to hit her or why she could be so kind one moment. Emma wiped her eyes with her sweater sleeve her lower lip trembling from fear.

"Emma!!" A furious voice of her foster mother rang through out the house. Emma pushed herself into the far corner pulling her blanket around her shoulders tightly as if it was armor. She hadn't meant to spill the milk, it was an accident. Just then she heard the door to her foster mother's room slam open. Emma clenched her eyes shut praying that she wouldn't look in the closet. Emma screamed when her foster mother yanked her from the closet.

"I'm sorry I'm sorry please don't hurt me please!!!" She sobbed and her foster mother pushed Emma to her knees as she walked over to her dresser.
"You need to learn dissapline. You need to know respect!!" She slurred as she pulled a thin belt from her dresser drawer and slowly, yet menacingly stalked over to Emma's small form. She raised the belt and brought it down hard on Emma's hands. The five year old's screams could be heard all through out the house and possibly beyond.

Emma pushed her sleeve up slightly and ran her finger along the still rather deep scar that ran along her right wrist. They had just pulled in front of the apartment building. David frowned at Emma who was being uncharacteristically quiet.

"Come on Em let's get you to bed." He whispered kindly and Emma nodded, still not saying a word as she made her way to the doors leading into the apartment building. "Em you okay?" He asked and she nodded slowly as she started up the stairs David trailing behind her.

He noticed Emma's fatigue by the second floor and gently picked her up. Emma laid her head on her dad's shoulder and to his surprise didn't protest.

On the third floor was when Emma finally spoke her voice soft and fearful.
"Dad, how mad do you think mom is?" She asked and something about her tone made David's stomach churn.
"I don't know Emma, why do you ask?" He questioned trying to sound nonchalant.

"Do you think she'll....that she'll... Nevermind it's a stupid question." Emma murmured so David stopped walking and made Emma look at him.
"Emma you can ask me anything." He promised and Emma sighed looking at her hands.

"Do you think she'll be mad enough to ...to hit me?" Emma asked and David sat Emma on her feet. He tilted her chin so their eyes met.
"Emma your mother would never hit you. Ever. Why would you think she would?" David asked gently and Emma looked down at her hands.

"Because...a lot of foster parents I had weren't very nice to me." Emma murmured showing her dad the scar on her wrist. David felt his anger bubbling inside of himself and he had to bite his tounge to stop himself from exploding.
"How old were you Emma?" He asked softly and Emma looked up at her dad sadly.

"I was five...I spilled milk." She admitted softly and was shocked when her dad pulled her into a tight hug.
"Your mother and I will never hurt you honey. If anyone even tries to hurt you they'll have to go through your mother and I. Let's just say you don't get between Snow White and her children." He promised and Emma smiled as she rested her head on his shoulder and he carefully picked her up once again.

David opened the door to the apartment and sat Emma on the couch.
"Where's mom?" Emma questioned but before David could answer Snow came flying down the stairs.

"Oh Emma." She exclaimed and to Emma's shock sounded more concerned than angry. "What did whale say?" She asked directing her attention to David.
"He said she'll be just fine if she takes it easy today and tomorrow. Basically she's been bed ridden." He explained and Snow nodded considering his words before she turned her attention back to Emma.

"How are you feeling right now? And don't you dare say fine Emma ." Snow warned her softly and Emma rubbed her eyes tiredly.
"I'm feeling tired." She murmured sleepily. Snow placed her hand on Emma's forehead and frowned.

"You have a slight fever." She whispered more to herself than Emma or David.
"Did you really nail the windows shut ??" Emma asked and Snow couldn't help but smile.

"Nope I had Regina put a spell on the apartment so you my dear can only exit if your father, aunt or I am present." She explained and was shocked when Emma nodded.
"She's had a rough day." David explained giving her a look that said he'd explain later.

Snow nodded then motioned for him to pick Emma up. He gladly did and carried her to bed. Snow swiftly removed Emma's jacket and boots before she pulled the covers up around Emma's shoulders.

"Snow can I talk to you?" David whispered pulling Snow out of Emma's ear shot as he pulled the curtain shut.
"What is it David?" She asked looking at the closed curtain.
"Emma before we came in, she started panicking and when I asked her what was wrong she said she was afraid you would hit her." David explained but before he could continue Snow interrupted him.

"What?? I would never!! I have never....why would she even think that?" Snow babbled and David grabbed her shoulders silencing her.
"Snow, Snow just calm down, it wasn't anything you did. Her old foster mother hit her with a belt and her other ones did similar cruel things. She was afraid." He finished and Snow stared at him with a blank gaze. David released her shoulders and she began to cry. Just as someone knocked on the door.

Emma frowned listening to her mother cry. Her dad had told her, why? Emma looked down at her hands just as Carmine climbed through Emma's window followed by a girl Emma didn't know.
"Emma we have to talk." She insisted.
