Chapter Ten
The Savior
Kyle Launey

When I tried to call my best friend Aiden, his voicemail answered instantly, affirming my assumption that he was too busy to show up even though we have always met up on Thursdays. Every single Thursday when the two of us were done with work.

"Penny, what are we supposed to do now?", I asked my most important girl with her white fluffy hair and huge, black eyes which were staring at me ere she snuggled against my body. Her eyes resting on me and I  stroke over her back softly while her tail wagged from one side to the other.

"How about going for a walk? Let's go for a walk Penny", I decided before she jumped up and ran towards the door. Her tail wagging happily and the smile on my face widened.

It was so fascinating that it seemed like she understood every single word I was saying. It had been Penny who saved me before I fell. Truth to be told, Aiden had a very vast impact on my recovery, however, it had always been this adorable samoyed who took away my loneliness and replaced it with warm feelings. Showing me that I wasn't alone.

The streets were empty which was probably due to the late evening hours which were slowly making their appearance. Nights in the middle of May were still incredibly cold. Colder than I have expected and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a young girl with blonde hair leaving 'Whole Foods' who was only dressed in a black tank top and light-blue skinny jeans.

Wasn't she freezing? She must be freezing. What on earth was she thinking? Why wouldn't she stop walking? Didn't she see the car approaching her?

"Shit", I hissed under my breath before I caught myself running towards the entrance of the store with Penny guiding the way.

It didn't take me long to reach the girl who was too engrossed in her own thoughts to realize what was happing right in front of her. Blonde hair falling over her bare shoulders when my body collided with hers and my arms stopped her from tumbling against the brick building with the green headline. Her green eyes were staring at me confused, shocked and grateful at the same time while my hands were still resting on her shoulders after I have pushed her a little bit too hard back onto the sidewalk.

Honestly, what was she thinking? Risking my own life to prevent her from walking in front of the black colored car whose driver was repeatedly shaking his head from one side to the other.

"Penny, are you okay?", my eyes searched for my most treasured girl in my life and the black, sincere eyes of my white furred baby girl were staring at me as if nothing happened.

"Thank goodness..", I mumbled ere my eyes wandered towards the girl with blonde hair and green eyes who was still standing in front of me. Not even a single word has left her mouth, but that didn't stop me from scolding her straight away: "What on earth were you thinking? Didn't your parents teach you the basics of looking left, right, left before walking over a street?"

"S-sorry", she apologized and still, I had the feeling that she wasn't really listening to a single word I was saying.

Somehow, I found myself imagining the craziest possibilities of what was going on in that empty head of hers. Pregnancy, debts, a break-up, drugs. The range was tremendous.

"If I leave you now, will you get home safely?"

"Uh-huuuuh", she mumbled, ere a deep sigh escaped out of my mouth and I realized that the huge responsibility of taking her home safely was planting its seeds on my shoulders. Seeing that I was a reliable, 22 years old and matured man, I made it my duty to take care of my younger fellows even though, just to be completely honest, she seemed to be old enough to take her of herself.

"Let me walk you home."

"Why did he kiss me?", her voice was quiet and it took me a few seconds until I finally understood what she said. Who kissed her and why was she so out of it? Wait! That was a rhetorical question, right? She didn't expect me to answer, right?

"He looked so different, so vulnerable", the words were stumbling out of her mouth as if she couldn't stop herself from saying whatever she was thinking.

Her pale skin which was highlighting her bright, green eyes and this confused expression on her face let her, for an unexplainable reason, appear extremely cute. She, indeed, looked like an elementary school kid who couldn't find her way back home after her very first day of hell. Her cuteness rose to the extent that I played with the idea of treating her to some candy in order to calm her nerves, but this thought immediately vanished out of my mind since I instantly felt like a pedophile who was preying on a small girl.

"Let's take you home. You need some sleep", my suggestion barely made it out of my lips before I felt a cold hand on my wrist, pulling me backward. A furious girl with black hair and brown, stabbing eyes was staring at me as if the devil himself was standing in front of her.

"Don't you dare to lay a hand on her", she threatened and I took a step back, holding my hands in the air as if I had done something wrong before I shook my head from one side to the other as I started to realize that I have just saved this girl's life.

"Oh, hold on lady", I started, but she was just about to insult me ere the blonde haired girl stepped in between her friend and me, finally telling the truth.

"He saved me, Chloe."

"Saved you?", her friend asked obviously confused and I nodded with my head held high. Somehow, my pride was enormous after hearing the words leaving the small girl's mouth.

My loyal, female partner Penny was softly barking approvingly and I squatted down to pet her fluffy hair as a reward for always taking my side.

"I was about to run in front of a car and he just pushed me back onto the sidewalk", she explained and the expression in her black-haired friend's eyes changed rapidly from hatred to appreciation.

"Thank you..", she started and I told her that my name was Kyle.

"Thank you, Kyle and sorry about what I've said", she apologized friendly while I nodded affirmatively.

"I'm Chloe as you may know and that's Dana. Thanks again Kyle, we owe you one!", the black-haired girl said before she grabbed her blonde friend's upper arm and dragged her towards the parking lot. Her steps heavy as if she was embarrassed and angry at the same time.

Geez. What a pair of weird girls. They fitted each other perfectly. One of them dopey and the other one slightly aggressive. WAIT! Hold on! Don't tell me...

...was that Nathan's Dana?
