Chapter 1
F.B.I. agent Dana Hatter sighed and gazed at the case in front of her. Another girl, however, this one was in a coma. The police officer on duty said that she had been running toward him and he thought he had seen something behind her so he shot but there had been nothing there. The next thing he knew, she had been spun around as if someone had grabbed her and then she just crumpled like the life had been sucked out of her. Dana gazed out the window as she thought about this case. Girls whose ages ranged from 14 to 18 were being taken from their homes and found dead in always the same place. In front of the old haunted house. “It makes no sense. Those girls are not related to each other at all.” Dana thought. Another curious thing was that all the girls died of exactly the same thing, fear. It seemed as if their brains flooded with it and their bodies gave out. The girl in the coma was similar in the way that her body was rigid as if she was afraid. Her brain showed activity but very little. It seemed that she was thinking and could feel things but she was in a constant state of fear.
“As if…” she trailed off without realizing she had spoken out loud.
“As if what?” a voice said loudly in her ear with its heavy British accent.
Dana jumped and turned to her partner, John Holmes. His grey eyes glittered with amusement as he chuckled.
Feeling her hazel eyes narrow in annoyance, she turned back to her desk and said, “As if someone is making these girls die of fear.”
Suddenly, she heard a low sound and turning around, she realized that John was humming as he made tea. Taking a container out of his satchel, he opened it and offered her a beautifully made biscuit from its depths. It was made perfectly, lightly toasted and dripping with butter. Dana looked at him, grabbed one of each and sighed contently as she started to eat. It was almost ridiculous how he knew her so well. Grinning, he finished making the tea and handing her a mug, started to review their case. She had memorized it and when he frowned, she knew exactly where he was.
“So they actually died of fright? How can that be?” he murmured to himself.
It was a mystery, at first Dana had thought that maybe the girls were starved but they were in excellent health. And for them to literally die of fright, someone would have to know their worst fears and then create an illusion or scenario where they were put into their worst nightmare. She hadn’t realized she was frowning until John chuckled again.
Snapping out of her reverie, she grabbed her coat and said, “Come along, John. We’re going on an adventure.”
Standing up, he shot her an accusatory look as he waved his half-finished biscuit in the air. Dana smiled and then shook her head, grabbing her badge and heading for the door. John sighed as he watched her curly brown hair disappear around the corner. The song “Here I go again.” Popped into his head. Grabbing his coat, he ran after his partner.
John P.O.V.
“In your report, you said that there was nothing behind her. Yet, she was spun around as if something were. Can you explain this?” questioned Dana to police officer Stark.
The poor man shook his head and said, “I know it sounds crazy but… I know what I saw. Even if it makes no sense and I sound crazy. The fact that this girl is in a coma when I saw her coming toward me, completely awake and aware of her surroundings, I don’t know what to make of it.” His wife placed a reassuring hand on his arm.
“Thank you Officer Stark for your help.” Dana said, to which he nodded absent mindedly. John observed Dana as she walked to their car. She was lost in thought and completely oblivious to her surroundings. He knew that at any minute she would start talking to him and expect him to respond. They had just been partners for that long. His cell phone buzzed suddenly, cutting off his train of thought. Putting it to his ear, he listened and what he heard made his blood run cold.
“Dana, there’s been another one.” At that exact moment she opened her mouth but when she heard what I said she froze. Before John could comprehend what was happening she was starting the car. He managed to jump in as she took off.
Dana P.O.V.
I burst into the office with John hot on my heels. My hair was flying all over the place but all I could think was not again. I headed straight to Eric’s office and he was already waiting for me with a grave look in his eye.
Handing me a file he said, “Lucy Hart, 15 years old was walking home when she was kidnapped right in front of the old haunted house. However, when we went to investigate, we found another girl. She was just like the others but in the autopsy report you will find that her body showed secondary signs of drowning. As if she believed she was drowning.” I gazed at Eric in disbelief before gazing at the file.
“Can you get me a list of girls between the ages of 14 through 18? I believe this murderer targets girls around these ages and we should keep an eye on them. I will also need a list of their worst fears. This may help us location wise.” With that, I turned on my heel and strode out of the room with my heart hammering in my throat and the weight of the lives of these girls’ on my shoulders.
So I have never ever written a story before and as this is my first time please please please with a lovely cherry on top bear with me!
