Chapter 1

“He’s such a sweet boy, I’m sure you know that already though. Of course you two only formally met once, but around school you must see each other all the time! I wish that-.” I cut Aunt Ally off when my brain processed what she said.

“What do you mean around school?!” I’m sure people in the cars next to us could hear my loud screeching. Could you blame me though? A guy from my school would be staying with them while I was there! I watched my aunt’s face take on a look of worry.

“Jake Cahill? He goes to your school sweetie…” Her eyes were darting from the road to my face, checking to make sure I was okay. Of course I wasn’t okay with it; the whole reason behind me going to Aunt Ally’s for the week was to take a break from everything back home, not spend the week with people from there! I didn’t recognize the name though, so maybe my aunt had it all wrong.

“I don’t think there’s a Jake Cahill in my school Aunt Ally.”

“Of course there is Julliana; Melissa even said she has seen you around town at times. She told me you looked so grown up and she is definitely right! You certainly got your mother’s looks; your hair is the exact same chestnut brown shade hers is!”

Beep Beep

I pulled my phone from my pocket to read the text from my mom that I knew would be coming.

‘How was the flight? Did you make it from New Hampshire to California alright? I hope everything with Aunt Ally, Uncle Tim, Tyler, and Steven is good. I love you!’

I typed a quick reply to let her know I arrived safely but quickly put my phone away after sending it since we had arrived. Staring out the window I contemplated whether or not to get out of the car. My decision was made for me though, since Aunt Ally opened my door and started pulling me up from my seat.

“Come on honey, your uncle and cousins are waiting! Oh, and Jake, I want to see him again, it’s been years!” I yanked my arm out of her grip, causing her to look at me questioningly. “Tyler and Steven will help with your bags, you just come inside!” I guess Aunt Ally had taken it to mean I wanted to get my stuff; fine by me.

“Where are Uncle Tim, Tyler, and Steven?” I looked around for any signs of somebody in the driveway but I didn’t see a car.

“The other car is at the shop sweetie, they are inside though, don’t worry.  Come along, hurry!” She opened the door and I walked in, taking in all the new furniture in their giant house. I glanced in the kitchen to see my uncle, Tyler, and Steven. The back of a boy who I assumed was Jake was also visible.

“Julliana! How are you?” I recognized Uncle Tim’s deep voice and walked into the kitchen to greet everyone. I could still only see the back of Jake though.

“Hi Uncle Tim!” I dodged his hug by bending down to tie my sneaker. I wasn’t as lucky with Tyler and Steven though. They each gave me one of those awkward half hugs and I tried not to tremble. “Hey Tyler! Hey Steven!”

“Hi Jules, how was your flight?” I was about to answer Steven’s question when Jake turned around.

“Hello.” My mouth dropped open when I realized Aunt Ally was right; he did go to my school. “Julliana?”

“Jake?” I was sure he was just as surprised as I was that we knew each other. “You’re in my gym class…” I trailed off while glaring at his head as if that would make him disappear.

“And don’t you sound happy about that,” Jake smirked, realizing that I was uncomfortable with the fact that he was there. It’s not like we were enemies or best friends; we barely ever talked at school. The main problem I had with him was that we knew each other. He would find out about why I was here, I just knew it. If Jake knew it was like the whole school knowing; he was a pretty popular guy. I tended to stick with my close friends, I didn’t like much attention.

“I’m perfectly fine with it, just surprised.” I lied through my teeth for my aunt’s benefit; she looked so excited to see Jake.

“Jake! I haven’t seen you since you were an itty bitty baby! My, you have grown up nicely! I see you have taken after your father’s looks. How are things going at home? How about school? You know my niece Julliana I assume? I’m sure you two will get along great this week! I just need to speak with Tim in the hall please?” Aunt Ally dragged Uncle Tim through the doorway, and I strained to listen in on what they were saying. I could tell everyone else was doing the same.

“You do remember why she is…I know that! What I don’t get is…She needed it to be alone. Alone... It’s sleep….Yes! I don’t see…Healing from something! I know it was going to take time…you can’t just throw in someone and expect…Of course! Fine!” Uncle Tim’s voice was too soft to hear, but we could make out parts of what Aunt Ally was saying. Steven and Tyler exchanged a knowing look while I stared at the white wall ahead of me. I knew they were talking about me. The look on Jake’s face told me that he had no clue what they were talking about, which made me feel a little better.

“Okay guys! How about Julliana and Jake unpack their stuff in their rooms and I will get dinner started? Steven, Tyler, go help Julliana bring her bags in.” Aunt Ally pointed Jake to his room while pushing the three of us out the door.

“So, how’s college going?”  I tried to make light conversation while lugging my stuff inside.

“College life is pretty cool.”

“Yeah, most of the professors are good.”

“Plus, there are some pretty sick parties!”

“Oooh, and how does your mom feel about those parties,” I teased them.

“Mom’s still in denial that we are old enough to be in college, Jules; how do you think she feels?” Tyler smirked as he and Steven dropped my stuff in my room for the week. “Here, go unpack. See you at dinner.” They walked out of my room, leaving me alone for a while.

I pulled out my iPod and plugged it into my computer to charge. Unpacking my clothes and other stuff, I sang along to the radio. I spun around; music was always a great way for me to forget about everything else.

“Well, now I know you’re not going to be a singer when you grow up.” Jake smirked from my doorway as I jumped in surprise.

“Look buddy, you can’t do that.” I glared at him when he just laughed at me.

“And why not?” Jake’s smirk grew larger when my glare did.

“What if I had been changing? You don’t just barge into somebody’s room!”

“But you weren’t changing, so it doesn’t matter.” His smirk was still present on his face, and I really wanted to smack it right off. I never talked to him at school, so I hadn’t learned what a jerk he was. I continued to get more and more pissed off as he wandered into the room and started poking about.

“Do you have any manners?” I threw my hands up in the air, exasperated. I could tell I wasn’t going to get anywhere in trying to get him to leave though, so I stood off to the side as he looked around. When his hands grazed over the dark blue and black box I owned, I actually smacked his hand.

“Out. Now.” My tone was dead serious, and I think he could tell the box was not something I was going to let anyone near. Therefore, he had enough sense to leave after sending me a questioning look. My mind was not on Jake anymore though; my mind had wandered to the box. It held only one thing, but that one thing was the entire reason I was here.
