Chapter 4

“Just water to drink.” The waitress nods as she writes everybody’s drink orders down. When she leaves everybody makes small talk about what to order. After the waitress brings over our drinks, we each order our meals.

“The Caesar salad please,” I say to the waitress.

“Darling are you sure? You can order whatever you want, and you didn’t eat a very big breakfast.” I doubted I would eat much of the salad, and so I didn’t want to order something bigger, but I knew my aunt was right. I would have to order something bigger so that nobody was suspicious of anything.

“Alright then, I will have the pasta please.”

“Your meals will be ready shortly,” She walked off towards the kitchen in the back.

“So, Jake, how are you doing in school? Do you get good grades?”

“I do pretty well, mostly As and Bs.” Uncle Tim nodded at him and turned to me.

“How about you Jules?”

“As and Bs also.” I started fiddling with my napkin under the table. All I really wanted to do at the moment was go to sleep, but I couldn’t do that. I was trying to convince everyone I was alright, and so I was going to be staying awake at night for the week to avoid my night terrors.

“Good, good. What kinds of activities do you two take part in at school?”

“I’m on the football team…” Jake trailed off, looking at me for my answer.

“I don’t do any activities after school.”

“What? You used to be a part of almost everything at school! What happened to-Oh, I’m sorry darling! I didn’t mean…” Aunt Ally trailed off nervously, realizing that something probably did happen to me. She was right though; there was something that happened to make me drop out of everything. Avoiding everybody’s curious eyes, I felt extremely relieved when the waitress brought out the food.

Everyone started eating, giving me a break from dealing with questions. I slowly ate my pasta, forcing it to go down. As usual, I immediately felt sick and jumped up covering my mouth. I ran off to the bathroom, ignoring the pain in my ankle. Throwing up in the toilet, I felt drained of energy. It was the worst combination ever, no sleep or food. It wasn’t something I could control though, so I had to deal with it. Leaning my forehead against the cool stall, I took a deep breath. I unlocked the door, going over to the sinks.

My hair was a mess and my face was flushed. I pulled out a toothbrush and some mouthwash that I kept in my purse for moments like this. After using them, I brushed my hair into a bun. I applied new makeup and looked myself over. I looked a lot better, so I limped out of the bathroom.

“Ow!” I looked up to see that I had bumped into Jake. “Why are you here?” He tried to steady me before I fell, but I pushed him off and leaned against the wall instead.

“Your aunt and uncle thought you didn’t look well, so they asked me to check on you. I’m going to guess you threw up in there?”

“No, I feel fine, why would I throw up?” I put on an innocent and confused look.

“Right. Can I ask you something?” Jake looked nervously at me, looking down hesitantly at my stomach.

“Yes?”
