Chapter 3
I had dragged myself most of the way there when I felt a slight tug and realized Jake had pulled out one of the ear buds from my ear. Glaring at him, I started to put it back in so that I could listen to my music once again. Jake pushed my hand back down and turned my shoulders so I faced him. Shrieking, I jumped back, landing on my foot with the injured ankle.
“Shoot,” I said, my face pale for more than one reason. Jake’s eyed held concern as he put his hand for me once again. Ignoring it, I got up on my own. This caused me to promptly fall down in pain, and for Jake to reach over to help me. I leaned away from him, making him sigh in agitation.
“Come on Jules, why won’t you just let me help you?” He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. Something about the way he looked made me want to run my own hand through his hair. Pushing the weird feeling down, I took a deep breath.
“I’m fine; I can get up on my own.” I avoided looking at his eyes.
“Right, because you just falling down really helps your case.” Jake offered his hand yet again, and I still ignored it. Jake’s eyes flashed with annoyance, and I shifted my ankle to a better position on the sidewalk. My phone rang, and I saw that Aunt Ally was calling. I held up a finger to Jake and answered the phone.
“Julliana! Where are you two? You were supposed to be back by now so we could have a nice day in town! What happened? Please tell me you are okay!” I gulped, realizing we had forgotten about being back within an hour.
“I’m sorry Aunt Ally! We lost track of time, we’ll come back now.” I watched as realization crossed Jake’s face also, and he turned to head back.
“Alright darling, but be quick!” We hung up and I put my cell into my pocket. I tried to figure out what to do about my ankle.
“Why didn’t you tell her about your ankle?”
“Dang, I forgot! She could have come to take me back.” I rolled my eyes at my own stupidity, and pulled out my phone to call her again. When she picked up I explained the situation with my ankle. I heard her voice turn frantic and worried, so I tried to calm her down. She said she would come get us, and I heard her rushing around looking for her keys. Hanging up, I turned to Jake and told him Aunt Ally was on her way. He nodded, looking at my ankle.
“Let me help you stand,” Jake said, still eyeing my ankle. I sighed, knowing my life would be so much easier if physical contact wasn’t such an issue. I hated pretending I was fine with someone touching me.
“I can stand myself.” I shook my head at him, and tried getting up again.
“Sweetie!” Startled by my aunt’s voice, I fell back again. “Oops! Sorry I startled you, dear! You two didn’t get very far on your jog, did you?”
“Well, little miss I can do everything myself over here insisted on limping all the way to that store.” I glared at Jake as he pointed to me.
“Julliana! What could you possibly need that caused you to try and limp to the gas station?” I sighed, knowing I couldn’t tell her it was for coffee. If I did she would know I didn’t sleep well. I got an idea and smirked at Jake.
“I forgot my feminine products at home.” My smirk grew as I saw Jake’s face turn red.
“Oh, sweetie, you should have just asked me! There is stuff under the sink in your bathroom.” Aunt Ally looked down at me. “Come on darling! Let’s get you in the car. Do you need any help?” She opened the car door for me.
