Prologue
“Darling! It’s been forever, I’ve missed you so much!” My aunt’s body engulfed me in a hug, warm and inviting. I tried my hardest not to flinch away from her touch, she hadn’t done anything wrong and it would just make her sad and confuse her.
“Missed you too,” I mumbled into her shirt, pulling away gently since it was too much to handle. “How have you been?”
“Oh Julliana sweetie, everything’s wonderful! Your Uncle and cousins are just as excited as I am to have you staying for the week! It’s a shame your mother and father couldn’t join, but I understand with work and all…” Aunt Ally trailed off, clearly not wanting to mention the other reason in case it upset me. I wasn’t the same girl I used to be, and my parents hoped a change in scenery would help me, and so they sent me to my mother’s sister and family for February vacation. Nobody knew why I wasn’t the same girl, that was my secret, but I definitely acted differently than I used to.
“So, how was your flight honey?” Aunt Ally started firing questions at me when we were in the car. I answered them as best as I could, remembering what a talker she had always been. Technology came to my rescue though, when her phone rang and she had to take a pause in her interrogation to answer it. I watched as her face changed from her usual bubbly self to complete happiness and then to worry.
“Now!? Why today? You do know that-Yes, oh a lot honey. Of course, I see. Well, yes. We will be there soon.” She closed the phone and carefully set it on her leg as she continued driving. I noticed her happiness was gone, replaced by worry. I braced myself as she turned to me.
“Honey…” As Aunt Ally took a deep breath I could tell I was in for something. “Remember how I am good friends with Melissa Cahill?” I nodded, recalling Aunt Ally’s best friend from when she was in college. “Well she is going on an anniversary cruise with her husband, and Uncle Tim offered that their son Jake stays with us while they were gone. Apparently they called today to check in on things and Tom was chatting with Melissa’s husband Simeon and he was saying how worried Melissa was about leaving Jake home alone for the week…and Tim offered that he stay with us. Of course considering you are here I was going to tell your uncle to say no, but I haven’t seen Jake since he was a baby and you know I would do anything for Melissa…plus the fact that your impulsive uncle already said it was fine.” I grimaced, realizing what she was saying. Whoever this boy was, he was staying the same week I was. Joy.
