I woke up with my hands tied behind a wooden chair, and my legs tied to the two front legs of it.
The room was dark, save for one of those antique lamps with the green shade covering it. It only illuminated the room a tiny bit, but I could see that it was a small room with very little furniture. The way I was tied made it impossible for me to see behind me.
No biggie. I knew every kind of knot and how to untie them. Give me 2 minutes and I'd be free.
As soon as I had loosened my right hand, a chuckle resounded from behind me. I wasn't alone. I heard the hinges of a bed squeak as someone stood up and felt the cold metal of a gun barrel being pressed against my forehead.
"You really think I'd leave you alone?" His deep and filling voice reminded what kind of evil twisted person I was dealing with.
"It's true though' I thought as I groaned inwardly. Deep down I knew that he wouldn't have left me alone and tied in what he called his "place of secrets." I should have known better than to think he doesn't know me that well. He's always a few steps ahead.
I responded with the most courageous voice I could, which cracked and sounded husky with fear.
"Y-you told m-me I was on b-break." I stuttered out. "I thought I h-had at least 1 more w-week to get settled in." I had known for a long time that he loved it when I was afraid of him. Yet again, that was always.
"We're getting tighter and tighter in schedule now. The sooner we get this done, the sooner you're through."
I knew he was lying. He would never let me go. But maybe what he meant by 'the sooner your through' was 'I won't kill you until we're finished.' It was kind of sickening to think that he would get rid of someone like me, the person who was the closest to him; but everything that this man did and had done was sickening.
"Fine," I spat out at him. I'll take my next assignment. What is it?"
"The assignment will be in your locker tomorrow at exactly 11:15. While everyone's at lunch, read the note and go directly home."
"Will it be coded?" I didn't want that note to fall into the hands of another student. But just in case, he always coded it for me.
"Yes. And I gave the principal $500 extra to let you leave early whenever needed."
It's amazing how many people will lower rules for just a bit of extra cash. Money seemed so useless to me now.
"What did you tell him?" I asked.
"I told him that you have to help take care of your 'sick and frail Aunt Sarah' on some days."
Lame. That's what the make-up story was. Flat-out lame. Well, it wasn't the worst story he had come up with for me.
"So you'll do it?" He chuckled. He already knew I would. I just had to say it to let myself know I was doing it.
"Yes."
"Good." I could feel him smiling behind me. I opened my mouth to say something more, probably an insult, but felt a pill slipped into my mouth instead.
Not meaning to, I swallowed it, and for the second time that day the world went dark.
