"Oh, I-I didn't. I-" Nick stutters.
"Save it!" I slam my locker shut and storm off towards the parking lot. What's so hard about leaving me alone? Did he really thing after a couple of hours everything would be good again? May I remind you he shot my brother. Sure it was a trank dart but still. He just doesn't know when to stop. I need to calm down. I pace back and forth taking deep breaths in hope that I'll calm down.
"Hey." Izzie says while walking towards."Hi." I continue to pace without looking at her.
"Are you okay?" The tone of her voice sounds worried.
"I'd be lying if I said yes." I take a final deep breathe and stop pacing."Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. I just need to calm down."
"As long as you're okay, but that guy you were talking to looked really depressed after you left."
"Oh please, but let's not get into that. You should get to class before you end up late."
"I don't care about those crusty teachers and their sad attempt at teaching a classroom full of dusty children, especially when my friend is upset."I instantly crack a smile. I turn and the expression she has on her face is so serious. I can't help but laugh.
"Whatever let's just go." I link my arm around hers and we walk back into the school building.
"Have study hall by the way."
"You're so lucky, I got stuck with history first."
"Well the classes are next to each other so I'll meet you after class."
"Ok." I wave bye as I enter the classroom. I look over to my seat and Nick isn't in the desk behind it. In fact his stuff isn't even in the classroom. Oh well. I take the seat next to Elaine and take out my books. Once I sit down Elaine just gives me an impatient look.
"Can I help you?" I say in a questioning voice.
"Umm... duh. Are you just not going to explain this?" She hands me a folded piece of paper that turns out to be the not I received yesterday. Dang, I slick forgot about that.
"What about it? Wait! How did you get that?"
"Don't worry about that. Do you know who it's from?"
"No, and I don't care either."
"How can you not? Some dude is totally crushing on you." She whisper screams like this is the biggest news she has ever heard.
"Sure, it's probably some some sick joke so there's no point in me getting all worked up for nothing."
"But what if it's not aren't you just the least bit curious?"
"Hmm... let me think about it. Nope."
"Ugh. You're so lame." She makes a pouty face and crosses her arms.
"I sure am."I laugh at her shocked expression then I noticed something different about her. "What's with the hat?" She is wearing a light blue beany that had all her hair tucked into it. She normally wears her hair out and constantly brags about how perfect her hair is. Now that I think about it I've never seen her wear a hat before. Her smile instantly drops when I mention the hat.
"Oh t-th-this ol-old t-th-thi-thing? It-It's n-n-noth-nothing." The thing about Elaine is that she tends to stutter when she's nervous, but this is really bad even for her.
"Um.. T-t-today Junior. Anyway so are you gonna tell me what's up or do I have to figure it out?" She knows I will figure it out sooner or later.
"Fine. Just meet me after school in the closed off stairway." She whispers in my ear. It's not like anyone is paying attention to what's she saying so why did she whisper? Shoot I'm barely listening.
"But I have soccer practice, and I really don't feel like walking all the way to the other side of the pacific ocean just to talk." I say wining.
"Just do it."
"Fine." The bell rings and everyone starts to pack up, but the teacher blows her whistle before anyone can leave the room.
"Great now that I have your attention. The bell does not dismiss you, I do." She says in a stern voice. I hate when teachers say that.
"Then what's the bell for?" Gavin says a little too loud. Mrs. Walsh's eyes go wide and she takes a deep breathe as if she's trying to calm herself.
"Mr. Harris, thank you so much for volunteering to scrape the gum off of every single desk on this hall. Everyone else you may leave. Don't expect to get a pass from me either Mr. Harris." Gavin's face falls and he reluctantly takes the scrapper from Mrs. Walsh. Once out of the classroom me and Elaine let out all of our contained laughter. I see Izzie waiting for me against the wall and I signal her to walk over to us.
"Elaine this is my new friend Izzie, Iz this is my best friend Elaine." I introduced them and Elaine's smile slowly fades away. Iz gives a weak smile and a small wave.
"My name is actually Ilicia, but you can call me whatever." She says shyly looking down at her shoes.
"Right.. well nice to meet you I guess. Remember meet me at the closed off stairway." She says with a skeptical look at Izzie then turning to me. She walks away after giving one last fake smile to Izzie.
"I don't think your friend likes me." She lifts her head and her voice goes back to normal.
"Nah she is always like that."
"Sure, so do you need a ride home after school?"
"No I can walk." She gives me a confused look so I take it upon myself to explain. "I have soccer practice today and you shouldn't have to wait on me."
"But your house is like 15 minutes away and that's by car."
"I know a couple of short cuts, plus I always do that when I've got soccer practice after school."
"Is that safe."I can tell she is concerned.
"Is guess I mean I've been doing it forever and I'm fine so far."
"Ok... I guess."
****
Tick. Tick. Tick. I stare at the clock as if when I look at it time will go faster. I'm begging for this class to be over. English is so boring. All the teacher does is talk throughout the entire class period or not talk at all and is on his computer the entire time. The worst part about this class is that it is right before lunch so on top of being bored out of my mind I'm starving too. Just ten more minutes. I look over to Fiona who looks just as bored as I am. We make eye contact and I mouth the words kill me while making a finger gun and putting it up to my head. In return she giggles quietly and makes a finger gun and pretends to shoot me. I try to muffle my laughter but I guess I interrupted one of Mr. Zimmer's famous lectures."Ms. Parker is there a problem?" Mr. Zimmer says in a stern vioce.
"Who me? No sir, no problem at all."
"Good then you won't mind going to the front office to tell them to turn up the AC in this room for me."
"But there's only five minutes until lunch." Is he serious right now?
"Your piont." I guess he is.
"Right nevermind. I'll go right away sir." I stand up and walk out the door. If I take the back stairway I can get to the office and back faster. I can be so smart sometimes. I go through the door that leads to the stairs and I hear a weird noise. I look over the rail and see Elaine kissing Fiona's boyfriend Kevin.
"What are you two doing?" That was a stupid question they are obviously kissing. Elaine's eyes go wide as she gives me the look of shame. Kevin just puts his hand over his face.
"I was hoping we could talk about this later." She says quietly.
"Well I'd start talking now if I were you. In other words explain yourselves." I say with a disappointed look on my face.
