4. DETENTION

I sighed, plopping down in the desk next to Josh, trying to ignore his surprised look.

Almost every afternoon I'd wait for Josh to get out of detention because he somehow managed to wind up there. Really, it was never a surprise. What did surprise me, though, was the next two that walked through the door.

Josh and I stood up in our seats, scolding our younger sibling.

"What're you doing in here?" We asked, somehow in unison.

Devin rolled his eyes, used to my attitude, "Some guy was talking shit about me."

Vinny huffed, sitting next to Devin, "He pulled your hair. I punched him, then when his friend went to hit me, Devin hit him."

Josh and I shared a look before sitting back down, both sighing.

"This better not become a regular thing, Devin." I mumbled, crossing my arms.

He shook his head, smiling, "It won't." He then stood up and grabbed Vinny's arm, skipping to the back of the classroom where they sat at the desk in the corner.

"They're so stupid." A new voice from behind us said.

"What?" Josh and I turned to her, slightly glaring.

She smirked, sitting in a desk then gestured to Vinny and Devin, "They both have a thing for the other, yet they don't know it."

My eyes widened and I quickly shook my head, "No way."

Josh nodded his head, agreeing with me, "Never."

She rolled her eyes, "Hundred bucks says they'll be a couple in less than a month."

"Deal." Josh and I said, shaking her hand.

She chuckled, shaking her head as she moved closer to us, "I'm Ryan Ashley, by the way."

"Ricky." I saluted her, sending her a small smile.

"Josh."

Josh and I were never really ones to make friends with others easily, because we both sort of had the same problem; We just couldn't get used to the feeling. But, Ryan Ashley seemed nice, and different, and actually like us and the guys. Judging by the amount of tattoos she had, she wasn't one to judge.

"So," She started, leaning back in her chair, "How'd you guys get in here?"

"I called the teacher a bitch." I mumbled, tapping the desk.

"Got in a fight," Josh said, biting his lip, "Some guys that were talking shit about us."

Josh was a lot tougher than I was. He would stand up for himself and others, where as I would take everything and wait for it to be over. He would never back down from a fight. Especially when the people were disrespecting the ones he loved. He fought for Vinny a lot, as well, because Vinny was a lot smaller than Josh. That didn't stop Vinny from getting in a few fights of his own. Really, they were as bad as each other, but very different at the same time. I got along with Josh better, just as Devin got along with Vinny better.

The detention room door was pushed open, causing Ryan Ashley and Josh to stop their conversation and turn to it, Ryan Ashley sinking back in her chair.

"Ryan," The guy growled, "Get up. We're going home."

I frowned, standing up, "Who are you? Her dad?"

"Her brother, actually."

"Step brother," Ryan Ashley mumbled, moving out from behind her desk, "And I'm coming."

Josh frowned, gently tugging on Ryan Ashley's arm before leaning down and whispering something in her ear.

She smiled, "Just keep getting in trouble."

He bit his lip, nodding his head before nodding his head and letting her go.

I turned to him, my eyebrow raised.

"What?"

"You so like her." I smirked, sitting next to him.

"I do not." He mumbled, adjusting his hoodie.

"You so do!" Vinny yelled, smiling at his older brother.

"Shut up, Vin!" Josh yelled, turning around to glare at him, "You can't talk, anyways."

Vinny blushed, giving Josh the finger before sinking back in his chair.

"Nice come back," I chuckled, lightly punching Josh's shoulder, "And, please don't ever bring up those two dating."

Josh rolled his eyes, "No doubt it'll happen eventually. Just look at where Chris and Ange are now."

Josh did have a point. Angelo and Chris started out all shy around one another, then became closer and actually looked like they were best friends. Then, a few years after that, they finally confessed.

At first, it was unexpected. Then, as time went on, you could see that there would eventually be something going on. I just hope Vinny and Devin don't go through that. I'd rather not have three idiot brothers. That is if they plan on...

I groaned, covering my eyes, "Just thinking about it makes me want to shoot myself."

Josh shook his head, "Let's not talk about it, yeah? There's only a few more minutes until we're out of this place."

I was about to reply before someone tapped my shoulder.

I spun around, looking up at Devin, "What's up?"

"Can I go to Vinny's after this?" He asked, playing with his fingers.

I pursed my lips, turning to Josh who shrugged his shoulders, obviously having no say in the matter.

"Fine," I said, holding a finger up before he could run away, "But, you guys have to keep the door open if you go into any room alone."

Devin scrunched his nose up, though he was still blushing, "Mkay."

He spun around and skipped back to where Vinny was, dragging him up and out of his chair and out of the room.

"You coming?" Josh asked, slinging his bag over his shoulder.

I frowned, "To yours, or out of the room?"

"Both."

"Yeah, sure." I nodded my head, repeating his actions and following him out of the room, staying a few metres away from Vinny and Devin who were talking up the front.

It was funny, because each of us lived on the same street. Josh and Chris were neighbours, who lived a few houses down from Angelo, and I was at the very end of the street, the furthest away from all of them. As far as I was aware, we were the only kids like us on the whole block, so that ruled out the opportunities of making any other friends. Though, I was glad that we were sort of our own group. It gave me the closure I needed, in a way.

"Ange told me you showed up at his." Josh mumbled, looking down at the footpath.

"Yeah," I sighed, "I wanted to get Dev out of there before anything got bad."

Josh nodded his head, "I understand. I would've done the same for Vinny, but you should really take his offer up."

I looked up at the sky, then to Devin who was laughing before he shoved Vinny into the bush who quickly got up and ran after Devin, "I'll think about it, okay?"

"Promise?"

I tried my best to smile, looking him in the eye, "Promise."
