The rain was beating down heavily while I was reading him a story. He was all wrapped up in a blanket, holding onto his plush for dear life with eyes wide with anticipation upon every word I narrated.
"Then the gallant prince heroically slayed the ferocious dragon using his sword and saved the princess. They then lived happily ever after.
The end." I concluded calmly and closed the book."Aw already?! Mommy can't you read me another story?" he whined.
"Absolutely not. It's way past your bedtime and you have school tomorrow." I said in a serious tone while putting the book inside a drawer.
"I don't want to go to school!" he complained then hid his face with the quilt.
I began to wonder why he would say such a thing but then again, don't all kids hate school?"And why is that?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Because... Because... Because no one would want to be my friend and they'll all just bully me." he stuttered.I sighed. From where on earth did he get such an idea? He's just a first grader!
"No one is going to bully you." I said with assurance. He peeked from the blanket.
"Really?" he asked with uncertainty.I nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes, really. Once they see what a good boy you are. Who always listens to his mother and goes to bed on time. They would want to be your friend more than anything." I said with a smile.
"Okay?" I asked politely and he gave me a slight nod."That's my brave boy." I praised and kissed his forehead. I wished him goodnight before switching the lamp off. As I approached the door, he gave me one last call.
"Yes?" I asked.
"I love you." he said affectionately.
"I love you too." I said with a warm smile.
He then shut his eyes and cuddled the toy which he loved dearly. I slowly and silently closed the door to his room and headed to my own.A sudden roar of thunder startled me and I could clearly hear the rain drops pelting the glass windows.
I sauntered into my ill-lit room and layed down on my bed ; letting the sounds of the weather fill my ears. I looked towards the left side of the bed and not surprisingly found a vacant space.
My hand caressed the desolate pillow gently. It's hard. It's just too hard...to forget and I can't help it.
Without thinking twice, I withdrew my hand and shifted myself to the right. After pulling the blanket over my body, I forced myself to sleep.Lightning and thunder continued to rage with fury through the night.
