Chapter 2

We grabbed our stuff and made our way off the trains. We stood at the platform crowded with other students, some our age, others older.

“Firs’ years! Firs’ years this way!” We turned to see that a giant with a big black bushy beard had spoken and was holding a lantern. We went to him, along with all the other first years, and he led us down to the boats. Someone behind me whimpered as we approached them, and though obviously no one else had heard, I knew it had been Draco. I smiled at him and together we made our way onto one of the boats along with two boys, one with dark skin who introduced himself as Dean Thomas and another with light brown hair who was called Seamus Finnigan.

“These boats aren’t too safe looking, are they?” Dean said, eyeing them, though he did not sound all that worried, “I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them had sprung leaks before.”

“Well, wouldn’t that just stink?” Said Seamus, “We’d have to be sorted into our houses all soaking and cold, and what a sight we would make.” We all shared a good laugh, and soon we were pulling up to the shore. We got off the boats and were led by a witch in green robes with a tight bun on the top of her head into the school. She led us up some stairs and then stopped to address us.

“My name is Professor McGonagall.” She said, “And I would like to welcome you to Hogwarts. Your bags will be seen to your rooms after you have been sorted into your houses. Is there a Stella Bright?” I gasped as she called my name. Me? What did she want with me? I stepped forward.

“I’m Stella.” I said, a bit shakily. She smiled at me.

“If you will follow me, miss Stella. The rest of you wait here until I call you.” She turned and I looked back at Draco. He smiled at me and gave me two thumbs-up. I smiled back and felt just a little bit better as I followed Professor McGonagall up some more flights of stairs. I looked around; we were walking down a long hallway, torches lit on the walls. She led me into a pair of great oak doors.

“Headmaster? I have brought Miss Bright.” Said McGonagall to a man in long blue robes with crooked specs on his twisted nose and a long white beard.

“Ah, Miss Bright. I am Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts.” He said, and sat down at his desk, gesturing for me to join him. I sat silently, noticing for the first time there were other teachers in the class as well. A short and balding man who went only up to my knees; a round lady who wore all green; and a tall man with a scowl on his face and thin, stringy black hair.

“I suppose you are wondering why you are here, Miss Bright.” Said Dumbledore, and I nodded. “We believe you are a very special young girl. More so than any other of the students here. We believe you possess a gift, and a gift that could come in handy while you are here. Have you heard of Lord Voldemort?” He asked, and most of the people in the room gasped sharply. I nodded; he was said to have fallen about eleven years ago, but his followers were still loyal.

“We believe he will soon be rising back to power in the next few years, and though they would not admit it, many of the families who have children in this school are still loyal to Lord Voldemort. Especially the Malfoys.” My eyes widened at that. “This is where you come in, my dear,” he said, “We need you to infiltrate and get close to their son, Draco. We believe he will be a very big tool in this war.”

“So…” I said, finally speaking, “You want me to get close to Draco so I can turn him away from the dark side?”

“Exactly. But there is one more thing I must ask of you, a great sacrifice on your part. You are to be sorted soon, and I would like to ask you allow us to sort you into Slytherin House.” I thought about this.
