Chapter 9

It’s been a few days since Draco and I have spoken, but I’m not willing to forgive him just yet, even if he did apologize. Hermione and I were sitting in the library, doing homework for Charms class.

“So what’s up with you and Draco?” She asked me, “It seems like you guys are in a fight or something.” I sighed.

“He’s just being incredibly…difficult. He said something wrong and he doesn’t even know just how incredibly wrong it was!” I said, frustrated. Hermione frowned.

“Well, that’s just Draco’s personality, isn’t it?” She said, “He was probably raised to think that way, I suppose it’s up to someone like you to change him, right?”

“Someone like me, huh?” I muttered, “But who am ‘I’? What am ‘I’ like? Ah!” I said in frustration. Hermione grabbed my hand and gave me an affectionate smile.

“You’re only eleven Stella!” She said with a laugh, “You don’t need to worry about that right now, those aren’t questions you need to answer just yet. Just worry about passing this year!” I smiled.

“Yeah…yeah you’re right. Thanks.” I said, honestly grateful, “So, how are Ron and Harry? I haven’t seen them in a while.” We chatted for a few more minutes, and then made our way toward the Great Hall for dinner. As we were turning the corner, we ran right into Draco and Blaise Zabini. We opened our mouths to speak at the same time, then closed them, looking away. We were silent, when Hermione jabbed me in the side with her elbow.

“I’m sorry!” We both blurted out at the same time. We stared at each other, both of our eyes wide, bemused expressions on our faces.

“Why’re you sorry?” Draco said, “I mean, besides being so stubborn you have nothing to apologize for.” I punched him playfully on the arm.

“Well, I shouldn’t have overreacted, I’m sorry for being so, ah, how did you put it? Stubborn?” We grinned at each other, and went on to eat dinner. After dinner, we went back to our common rooms. We grabbed the armchairs by the fire and stayed up chatting for a while.

“Stella, maybe you should head to bed,” Pansy said, “You aren’t looking too great.” I frowned.

“But I’m not tired.” I protested. It did not help that seconds later, I let out a huge yawn. The others laughed and sent me to bed. I really wasn’t tired, but I dressed in my pajamas and climbed into bed anyways. I really wasn’t tired, but my eyelids suddenly felt heavy and closed themselves against my will. I really wasn’t tired, but I fell into a deep sleep that didn’t keep the weird dreams out again.

I woke up last again and hurried to get dressed. June 5. I rushed down to the common room where Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, Pansy and Blaise were waiting for me. June 5. We went down to the Great Hall, chatting all the way. June 5. After breakfast we went to Herbology.

The date kept repeating itself in my head and I could not for the life of me figure out why. It was somehow connected to Draco, I could tell that much.

“Say, Draco,” I said during lunch, “Is June 5 your birthday?”

“Uh, yeah it is, why?” He confirmed. I nodded my head, as if this made perfect sense. Which, actually, it did.

“The mystery is solved.” I said, “Huzzah!” The others looked at me like I was crazy, and I couldn’t help but grin. And so, life went on. We went to class, hung out by the lake, I stayed up late helping Draco, Crabbe and Goyle with homework. Crabbe and Goyle were surprisingly fast learners, Draco was the problem. He didn’t like to focus.
