Chapter 3

The dorm rooms were impressive. The room itself was huge; it must have taken up at least half of the lake. Each bed was on its own little pedestal with stairs that led up to it, a nightstand, and a railing. The beds were canopy with green and silver shades. The bedspreads were made of soft fabric, and the top spread was green with a silver snake on the center. On each pedestal there was someone’s name carved into the front.

I had gone up to bed about ten minutes after Draco when someone had come down to make sure no one else was awake. He had spotted me, crying, and put a hand on my shoulder, and smiled at me.

“Stella, right? I know it’s hard.” He said, “I was afraid one my first day too. A new place, new people. Don’t worry, it gets better. We’re your family, and we’re going to make sure you have a happy time here.” I sniffed, and smiled back. “Now, why don’t you head up to bed? And if you need anything, at any time, just ask for Ian Prestige.” I thanked him heartily, and then had made my way upstairs. Now, I lay awake in the dark room, wondering why Slytherins were said to have such a bad reputation. Maybe they pretended to be someone they weren’t because that was what was expected of them. I don’t know. I didn’t think I would fall asleep, but soon my eyes closed and sleep claimed me.

I woke a little bit after everyone else. There were only three other girls left in the room, and I hurried to get dressed. I looked at my robes distastefully; they were so bland. Something had to be done about it, but I had no spare cloth. I made my way quickly into the commons where Draco, Crabbe and Goyle sat by the fireplace.

“There you are!” Crabbe exclaimed, “We was waitin’ on you.” I smiled and we all made our way into the dining hall. I passed Ian, who had already finished eating, and he winked at me, and I gave him a smile. Halfway through breakfast, the headmaster stood.

“Welcome students. I would like to welcome some of the teachers who were not introduced last night. This is our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Quirrel.” Said the headmaster, and a thing man with a turban around his head stood, gave a shaky smile, and sat back down. “Professor Snap will be acting as our Potions master.” The man I had seen yesterday, the one with stringy black hair and black clothes stood. There was applause only from the Slytherin table. “Enjoy your breakfast.” I had toast, eggs, bacon and this delicious thing called pumpkin juice. I had only had it two other times, once was when Aunt Marcie had brought if for New Year’s once, and the other when mother, father and I had gone shopping for school stuff in Diagon Alley.

“So, what class do we have first?” I asked, and Draco pulled out his schedule.

“Let’s see.” He said, “Looks like we have Potions first. Ugh,” His nose crinkled in distaste, “With the Gryffindor’s.” I frowned.

“I don’t think it’ll be that bad.” I said honestly, and Draco laughed.

“We’ll see.” He said, and we went back to breakfast. After we were done, I realized I had left my bag back at the table, so I told Draco and the others to go on without me.

“You sure?” he asked, and I nodded, then ran back into the dining hall. I grabbed my bag, then ran from the room, rounded a corner, and ran straight into the girl with puffy brown hair from the train. We both stumbled, and my bag fell, the contents running loose.

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry!” She said, grabbing my ink and quill, “Oh, I should have watched where I was going.”

“No, no, it’s my fault, I shouldn’t have been running.” I said as we stood. “Stella Bright.” I said, sticking out my hand.
