I remember both of us starting 7th grade. We had only one class together, and that was gym.
Gym was pretty easy at first because we were never without a partner, except for the days that one of us was gone.
One of the days I was gone Sam partnered up with this new kid named Ezra.
Ezra was tall and slim and he had black hair that was styled into an undercut, but wasnt jelled back, so it sloppily was side swept. I don't remember where he was from, but I know he was latino.
Ezra seemed cool, or from what I heard Sam say about him, seeing as I never actually really talked to him.
Anyway, Sam and Ezra partnered up that day and the next day when I had came back I had to partner up with some other kid. I didnt mind because I thought it was nice of Sam to partner up with the new kid.
However, after a while he wasnt just partnering up with him because he's new and could use a friend. He began to just partner up with him because well, why not? And soon I began to partner up with other kids as well.
Ezra and Sam got closer, eventually   he started sitting by Ezra at lunch, then at assembly's, and soon enough he couldnt hang out after school because him and Ezra were.
The times he did ask to hang out with me, I was busy with my new group of friends. The days he did ask to sit by me at lunch, I'd say sure but then my table was full. If we could work in groups of three in gym his first pick was me, but I was already partnered with two other kids.
By the time we were both actually thirteen we had two totally different friend groups. He hung out with Ezra and his friends, while I hung out with a completely different crowd.
The promise we made over the summer didnt last and all the years of being best friends in elementary schools didnt matter much.
At the time, I really didnt notice or stress it too much because we just sort of grown apart. even though it sucked that my best friend was now somebody elses best friend and I too had a new best friend, I got over it.
