CHAPTER-8
Aditi lived with Shibani Ganguly. Shibani was her best friend's younger sister. She worked with top notch IT Company and was used to live alone. When Aditi was looking for a new place she was happy to help. Shibani, though 2 years younger to Aditi, was her guide and always mended her way whenever she deviated from the right path. She was not as beautiful as Aditi but she was more sensible, caring and mature. In fact Shibani was the most sensible girl I have ever met. I knew her because of Aditi, but we struck a good chord and became very good friend.
I and Shibani were at Arjun's apartment. Shibani was busy talking to her new boyfriend while I was out in the balcony, engrossed in Aditi's thoughts.
I went in when I overheard Arjun talking to someone and was surprised to see him talking to his laptop. "Are you kidding me?" I said, laughing.
"What?" he asked, with hand motion.
"Why are you talking to your laptop? Is it lonely?" I chuckled at my joke.
"No, don't be silly, I'm trying out new speech recognition software" he said, trumpeting.
It was not the first time I caught Arjun trying out latest application and weird software. He was a technology freak. I remember he once told me about this hypnotism software. All one has to do was sit in front of the laptop and keep his eyes fixed on the pendulum swinging to and fro on the screen, and say the lines appearing at the bottom of the screen, of which he said was some sort of pre-medieval language. I was anxious so I volunteered. After I finished, all he said was- 'I think this software is corrupt'. A week later Raghav told me about a hilarious video that has gone viral on social networking sites in which a man was saying most disgusting and awful things about himself, anyone could ever think of. The video which ran with English subtitles got thousands of hits in a week. The video is still the most watched and liked video on Arjun's YouTube profile. That man, unfortunately, turned out to be me and the pre-medieval language, actually, turned out to be Spanish. I became the laughing-stock in the world of social networking. The only reason I didn't kill Arjun for it was that he was sensible enough to blur the face of the man in the video.
"How does it work?" I asked.
"Well, I just speak what I want to say into microphone and my words appear on the screen. It's magic!" he replied, smiling.
"Do you want to try?" he asked.
"Definitely not!" I said, without wasting a second. "I don't want to make a fool out of myself again."
"Let bygone be bygone," he said. "I have apologized for that."
"I understand," I said. "But there are things you can't forget but wish you could. And then there are things you forget naturally..."
My eyes grew bigger in panic. I picked up car's key and rushed out shouting "...like picking up your mother's jewelry."
Shibani came running behind me when she heard the word 'jewelry'. It turned out like any normal girl she was also very fond of jewelry. I had told her I had to pick my mother's earrings before 4:00 pm from the Fashion Jewelers.
Being late bothered me so much that just thinking about it made me queasy. My being late, which did occasionally happened, usually caused me to break out into a nervous sweat. The later I was, the more it looked like I'd sprung a leak. Catch me more than 15 minutes late and it looks like I went swimming.
