CHAPTER 24
"Baby girl, wake up." The voice floated over the sleeping woman and she stirred slightly. "Come on now, wake up. The dark time's comin'."
The woman cracked an eyelid and stared into the darkened room. "Momma? Is that you?" She sat up and looked around while rubbing at her eyes.
Am I dreaming?
"No, you aren't dreaming," the voice answered her thoughts.
She pushed the covers off herself and swung her feet onto the floor quickly.
"Where are you, momma?"
"I'm here, but not. You gotta get ready, sweet girl. Bad things are comin' for you. It's started and your time as the Guide is upon you."
The woman peered into the darkness as she pulled the comforter around her shoulders like a cloak and tightly hugged herself. She let her eyes adjust to the gloom, aided by a streetlight glowing through her bedroom window. She sat and listened to the sounds of the night: cars in the distance and crickets closer to home. She thought of her shop downstairs and the secrets she kept.
"I'm not ready," she whispered, hoping to see her mother's ghost. "Please, momma. I'm gonna need your help."
Something shimmered by the window and then was gone. "You better be ready, Minerva. The Guardians are awakening. I can't come back no more, but I'll be watching and ever hopeful, my baby girl."
The air stirred next to her, and Minerva felt the brief touch of something soft on her cheek, tender like a mother's kiss.
"You're the last of me...of us. Just be ready."
"How much time do I have?" she asked.
"You don't. Be ready, the chosen ones will find you," the voice whispered close to her ear.
The woman reached out towards the sound and the air shimmered briefly. "Momma, I love you," she said, but was alone again in the shadowy confines of her room.
Bad things are comin' for you.
The warning sent a chill skittering down her spine as Minerva reached out to turn on her bedside lamp with shaking fingers. She felt the darkness in Portsmouth growing, spreading the shadows and branching out, and focused her mind on the only hope for the future: The Guardians.
I'll be waiting for you. Ready or not, here I am.
