SOPHIE
Sophie was at a new school again. She hadn't been to that many, but starting over was always a drag. This was- what, her fifth this year? Ok, so fine, maybe it was a little more than normal kids moved around.
Well, the fourth hadn't technically counted, because she was only there for a month.
The thing was, this time it was different. Her new foster parents (10th time the charm, right?) were apparently really rich. This was bad for multiple reasons, but mostly because of one thing: Foxfire.
No, it's not a type of fungus. That's what Sophie guessed. It was something much, much worse.
A private school.
Foxfire Academy was apparently one of the most prestigious schools in America, and while she would have settled for old Exillium Secondary School (she actually would have preferred it) she was forced to go to the snotty, stuck-up, filthy rich Foxfire.
She was pretty sure they didn't even have phone service there.
Unfortunately, today was the day that she would be taking a drive to her new school, located in a large town nicknamed the Lost Cities. It was called that for two reasons: one, because it was barely ever put on traditional maps, and two, because the place was so split up that it almost seemed like some of the spots there were different worlds.
Just take Foxfire and Exillium, for example. Foxfire, being rich and all, was strategically placed in the topmost left quadrant of the Lost Cities, where all the upperclass citizens were. Exillium, on the other hand, was directly across it when looked at on one of the few maps that showed the secluded area, along with Exile Correctional Facility, the maximum security prison that certainly didn't belong in the place it was- but, if it were to be anywhere, it did seem right to put it there.
Needless to say, the prospects of this new town were not looking good for Sophie.
Grady, one of her foster parents, turned around in the passenger seat. "We're here, Sophie," he said, a cheerful grin plastered onto his face. She resisted the urge to glare, but didn't. No matter how annoying they were being for sending Sophie to Foxfire, she wouldn't risk even a mean glance. She wouldn't lash out at them.
Not after what happened last time.
She smiled back (even though she was pretty sure it looked very fake), and opened the door of Edaline's beat-up minivan. Edaline was her other foster parent, of course- she ran a small bakery while Grady worked as a veterinarian. It wasn't so bad- Sophie actually kinda liked them. It was just- Foxfire. C'mon.
Grady and Edaline smiled as Sophie slung her backpack over her shoulder and leapt out. She closed the door behind her and looked up at the school.
It was pretty big, to say the least: the front itself was as big as her new room and even fancier. A few students were standing outside, but Sophie didn't recognize anyone, obviously, so she decided it would probably be good to just sign in.
She, Grady and Edaline walked in through the front doors and straight towards the office. Sophie had never been, but she guessed that her new foster parents had, because they knew almost exactly where to go. She briefly wondered why they would know the school so well, but chalked it up to the fact that they must have checked it out before signing her up.
