DEX
It's not that Dex didn't like new people, and the new girl was admittedly kinda cute, (ok fine, kinda really cute) but she was definitely trying to find out what was different about their group. He considered that they might have to be more careful not to expose themselves, with the new girl on their case.
See, Dex and his friends all sorta had these kinds of powers.
It was pretty cool some of the time, but at other times it was not, like when people started snooping around. Then for a while they would have to be careful not do try anything around the students, just like today.
Dex often wondered if having the power was even worth it. He knew he was lucky that he finally found somewhere he could fit in, people who finally understood him, but his power wasn't the coolest of his friends per say.
He was basically the tech guy in the group. Fitz could read minds. Biana was always vanishing (sometimes it was a little hard to explain if she slipped up) and Keefe could feel people's emotions. Of course, there was also Tam and Linh, but they sort of kept to themselves.
Dex looked across the cafeteria to where the girl was sitting. She didn't seem to be looking at them anymore like she had in math class. Maybe she gave up trying to understand them, like Marella had after a day or two. That's what Dex wanted to believe at least. But he knew that something was different about her. That she wouldn't give up. Maybe she wasn't even suspicious, but Dex couldn't be too careful. Plus, now she was sitting with Marella, who was the closest to ever come to finding out their secret. And Fitz had said something that worried him.
Her mind was quiet.
Fitz could hear almost everyone's thoughts, excluding people with powers like the group.
And now, he couldn't hear this girl's either.
The girl had found Jensi and Marella's table with ease after Marella cheerfully showed her around, but today, oddly enough, Stina was there, who probably wouldn't be Dex's first choice for eating lunch with. Or doing anything with. But he knew that Sophie was probably just thankful that somone was at least talking to her, he knew the feeling.
For a moment he thought about walking over to her, rescuing her from Stina, but immediately regretted even the thought. Knowing himself, he would have blushed until his face was as red as a tomato. It might have only increased her suspicions, and he knew that she could never hang out with the group without finding out their secret.
Dex looked over to where Fitz was sitting, and noticed he had taken an interest in the girl too, he wondered if he was thinking the same thing, or about inviting her to sit with them.
Keefe hadn't seemed to notice her yet, but Dex knew that he must have seen the others in his group take interest.
Maybe Dex and some of his group were just paranoid.
"Fitz, if you keep looking at her, she's going to think you're creepy," Keefe said, proving Dex's suspicions that Keefe noticed them looking. Fitz hadn't told anyone but Dex about how he couldn't hear her thoughts, so he supposed Keefe didn't think anything was up. "She's the one that's been staring at us all day!" Fitz protested impatiently. "Haven't you noticed too?" Keefe looked over to check if Fitz was right, but the girl had gone back to talking to Marella and the rest of her new group. Keefe laughed at Fitz's expression.
Dex glanced once over once more, then went back to eating lunch, again trying not to think about it too much.
There always seemed to be so many worries and what-ifs going through his mind.
SOPHIE (*time skip*)
Sophie hadn't failed to notice that the group she had taken interest in had also noticed her. She supposed it had something to do with the fact that she may or may not have been staring at the periodically throughout the day, but that wasn't the point. Right now, she was busy exploring the upstairs of her new house.
The house consisted of the main floor, which was the kitchen, living room, Grady and Edaline's bedroom; the basement, which was the den and guest room; and most importantly: the upstairs.
The uppermost floor held Sophie's room, a storage room that Sophie was dying to explore when Grady and Edaline weren't in the house at some point, and an odd room with a locked door that Sophie was debating trying to break into. She had decided against it for now, but she wasn't sure if she could resists the temptation of the possible secrets inside forever.
Grady and Edaline had barely told her anything about themselves since taking her in yesterday. She guessed they just hadn't had the time yet, but she was also really curious (and a little suspicious).
Sophie opened the door to her new room, which was about twice the size of her last one and twice as messy after she had tried unpacking, putting up a 'few' posters, and organizing her books. The room was painted a light pink that Sophie wasn't the biggest fan of, but her queen-sized bed and canopy made up for it. There was even a huge window to the left that she thought was one of the best parts of the room.
She didn't really feel like opening up her suitcase and bags (packing things up from old houses and then unpacking them again numerous times had become an extremely tedious task), but she knew she would have to do it at some point.
Instead, she grabbed the backpack that she tried to keep with her at all times and whipped out her laptop. Checking her email wasn't much more exciting than anything else she had to do, but procrastinating was a skill of hers that was much more practiced than unpacking clothes.
She logged into her Outlook account and deleted a few useless emails, but she knew she was only looking for one. Even if she wouldn't admit it. One from her old family.
