When I awake, it's naturally, but I soon become aware of a hammering heartbeat coming from beneath my head. With closed eyes, my thick hair prevents me from knowing the surface I'm on, so I open heavy lids to take a look at my surroundings.
I find myself sprawled accross a warm body, limbs entangled and fingers splayed accross a bare chest. All of my memories have rushed back, and I realize that it's Danny I'm cuddling with.
Apparently, he's noticed the shift in my breathing patterns, and his hands move to card my hair.
"Good morning" he mutters, and I can hear the smile in his voice.
"Morning" I mutter in to his chest, voice thick with sleep. I push myself up and yawn, stretching my arms in to the air in an attempt to wake up.
"God" I grumble under my breath. "I need some tea.
"Tea?" Danny asks incredulously from below me, pushing himself up on his elbows. His eyebrows raise. "Very punk rock" he remarks snarkily.
"Well, you know, I get it black like my soul" I joke back, smiling to let him know I'm joking. He laughs, and I can feel his chest vibrating beneath me. I giggle at the sensation.
The morning is silent, the only noise Danny and I talking inside the truck. The Sun's rays seep through the window and reflect rainbow patterns on to my dark caramel skin, and the warmth of the blankets has become stifling. My dark hair falls in front of my face, and he reaches up to tuck it behind my ears.
"Seriously, though" he says. "Tea?"
"It's an addiction" I confess. "I have to have at least one cup a day"
"Or what?" He asks, mirth in his voice.
"I get very grumpy"
"Well then, we should get some tea in to your system."
We get fully dressed and drive to a local café, groggy but blissful. We slide in to a corner booth, clutching pastries and steaming drinks.
"So" Danny begins, before biting in to his blueberry muffin. "Mmmmm" he moans. "This is good" a few crumbs fall out of his full mouth before he pauses and swallows. "How did I not know this was here?"
"Well, as a semi-hipster" I begin, motioning to my Gages and beanie, "it's my duty to know about obscure coffee houses." I pause. "Though actually, this used to be my favorite pizza place. One day, after the construction was done, I decided to see its replacement, and I haven't missed Frank's Pizza since.
The place itself is very cute, tucked in to a quiet corner of my sleepy Maryland town. The baristas know me by name and I do the chalkboard drawings for them in return for free drinks.
I take a sip of my tea, giving him an oppurtunity to speak.
"Are you wearing contacts?" He asks.
"No" I tell him. "I just have unusual genes"
"No kidding" he tells me. "I've never seen such a dark skinned person with such light eyes. It's beautiful"
"Thank you" I tell him, a faint blush stirring in my cheeks.
He smiles softly.
"Hey!" I say, smiling widely. "Dimple buddies!"
"Oh yeah" he comments, smiling back at me before taking a long sip of coffee. "They're kind of weird"
"Like dents in your face" I agree
"But cute"
"According to everyone else"
"I think I'd have to agree with them" he says, eyes lingering on me.
"Me as well"
Our stare off is interrupted by a ringing noise.
"Gotta take this" Danny says, pulling out his phone from his pocket.
"Hey bro" he says. There's a pause, and then some muttering on the other end of the line. "Okay" he says, then, "bye" and then he hangs up.
"I've got to leave soon" he says. "It's time to open fanmail at EP studios." Then, his face changes. "God, that's so weird to say. Fanmail. We have fans."
"Well, goodbye" I say, standing up. "Do this again sometime?"
"How about tomorrow?" He asks, standing up with me.
"Sounds great" I smile. "How about this: I took you to one of my favorite places today, timmoriw, you take me to one of yours?"
"Awesome" he tells me. "I'll text you soon"
And then he's out the door with a wave of his hand and a smile.
