Katherine felt her heart speed up, as she timidly called out, "...Hello...?"
It seemed a stupid gesture, she must have looked like a lamb being taunted and stalked by a lion.
She heard a gentle splash, and there in front of her face was The Sirena. The creature that sponsored nightmares and ghost stories, right there. A foot in front of her face. Her skin was a deep sea greeny blue. And in the light by the sunset, Katherine could see her tail. Long and glistening that reflected the light from the sun, the same shade as her skin but with shards of gold. Her hair was a raven black river of jewels tied in a long braid, pieces of gold intertwined through it and an elegant tiara, enfused with diamonds. She had smaller translucent fins by her hips and was wearing a beautiful rose gold chiton with a gold belt. It floated around her tail that was powerfully beating down on the water. The wispy ends of her long, long hair dancing in the waves. Katherine looked stunned. This was not how she had imagined the evil Sirena to appear.
The Sirena drifted closer to the mound her hands, gold bangles and bracelets caressed her wrists, and helped pull herself gently forward.
"Who are you?" Katherine managed. Even though she already knew the answer, perhaps she could buy herself some time.
"You know who I am." The Sirena raised one perfectly formed eyebrow, her voice sounded foreign but she obviously wasn't from anywhere Katherine had heard of.
"Where did you come from?" She stammered trying to sound confident but failing and sounding quite foolish and scared instead.
The Sirena looked unimpressed.
"Down there," The Sirena replied calmly, a small smirk creeping at the edges of her mouth, "Let me show you."
And before Katherine could object she was grabbed by the arm and dragged underwater. She kicked about panicking, flailing around her arms drastically. She let out a scream, then quickly remembered where she was and shut her mouth quick. But the water had entered her throat and she desperately chocked. A searing pain burned in the lungs and she noticed through the pain, The Sirena grabbed one of her legs and another burning pain branded itself on her ankle.
And she blacked out, everything going dark like the soot lying in her fireplace.
