(Marshall's POV)

It's finally Friday and I just got out of school. I walked towards Fionna's locker. Her, Cake, Gummy and I were going to her house to hang out. Everyone was already at Fi's locker.

"Okay, let's go." Fionna said after I arrived, leading us down the hall. While her and Cake talked about boys and other girly things, Gumball and I stayed behind. After a long moment of silence I spoke, "Are you feeling any better?"

"Of course not." He said in a soft wail.

"Oh...sorry."

"It isn't your fault, it's my own." There was silence after that. I spoke again.

"I thought you always wanted to be successful. Like, good grades and stuff. Getting into Harvard."

"It was...but I've been having second thoughts. I mean, all that sounds so boring! I can't devote the rest of my high school years to something like that."

"Of course you can."

"No, I really can't. Or at least I don't want to."

"And so that's why you don't know what you want anymore?"

"Basically." There was more silence.

We reached Fionna's house and walked inside and downstairs to her basement. She had a really nice basement. Big couch, huge flat screen, mini fridge, a ton of video games, and a ton of movies.

"Guys let's watch Rise of the Guardians!" Cake shouted. Fionna squealed and put it in. In case you couldn't tell, it was their favorite movie. I waited for Gumball to sit down and then swooped down next to him. Fionna and Cake both sat down on the giant beanbags in front of the couch. The movie started and Cake and Fionna gushed over how cute Jack was.

I looked over at Gumball. He looked tense and kept fidgeting. I nudged him and he looked up at me.

"What's wrong?" I asked quietly. I didn't want either of the girls to hear, luckily they were too busy fangirling over Jack.

"Nothing." Gumball said unconvincingly.

"Bullshit." Gumball sighed at my words and spoke again.

"I don't wanna talk about it." I dropped the topic and went back to the movie.

I was growing increasingly bored and when I'm bored I end up playing with things. Like in school, I was always tapping my pencil on my desk out of boredom. Right now, though, my choice of item to play with was Gummy's hand. No, not hold it. Just play with it. I grabbed each individual finger, bend it every which way. I traced my finger over the lines on his palm. I made obscene gestures. I did everything.

I put his hand down eventually. Gumball looked up at me and said, "No, keep doing it. I like it."

I laughed and continued. It was really quite fun.

The movie was over and now we all just sat around talking. Well, it was more like Fionna and Cake showing each other fan art and me and Gumball having a lazy conversation with each other.

"Her class sucks," Gumball said, "She doesn't explain anything. Just expects us to understand."

"Yeah." I said agreeing with his little rant about our math teacher.

"Am I boring you? I know you don't really like talking about school."

"It's fine. It's kinda cute how into it you are." He blushed at my words. I smiled at him, he was seriously extremely adorable.

I bet you're probably thinking; Marshall how could you have formed these feelings in just one day?

But, these feelings have always been here. They were just more general. Like, Fionna is hot and sometimes she does really hot things but I would never crush on her (let alone date her). Gumball is really cute and I've always thought this, now I'm just labeling it as a crush and focusing on his cuteness even more. Because that's really all a crush is. Focusing on a certain person and absorbing their cuteness.

"Be right back guys." Fionna said, she jumped up and Cake followed. Cake always followed Fionna.

"You and Fionna would be cute together." Gumball said. I would be lying if I said that didn't hurt.

"Fionna? No way." I said. He sat forward and turned towards me.

"Why not?" He said with a smile.

"She's not my type."

"Then what's your type?"

"You." I had regretted it as soon as I said it. Gumball's face fell and I sprang up. I ran upstairs. Fionna and Cake were in the kitchen.

"I got to go home." I said running out of the house.

I'm such an idiot. Now he probably won't ever talk to me again. He hates me, I know it. Even I hate me as of right now. I walked briskly towards my house and thought of that scene over and over again. How could I have been so stupid? I mean, sometimes my mouth goes faster than my brain but to say something that stupid? I'm so fucking dumb!

I stormed into my house, going up to my room. I closed my door and sat on my bed. I laid down and tried as hard as I could to not think about my mistake.

I failed.

Instead of trying to forget I ended up replaying the moment over and over thinking of the worst things Gumball could be thinking. Oh god, what have I done?

"Marshall! Your dad's coming home today! Have you even started your chores?" My mom came into my room, not even knocking.

"Oh my god, Mom, I'll get it done!" I said shoving my head into my pillow. My mom was probably the most annoying creature on the planet. And don't even get me started on my dad. He was probably the biggest jerk on the planet. And verbally abusive. Of course, he didn't realize how hurtful his words were. He was just giving me "constructive criticism". Yeah, telling me the songs I write are gay as fuck and that I'll never amount to anything isn't constructive criticism.

"Marshall! Come on!" My mom screeched from downstairs.

"Just wait a minute!" I yelled back, spazzing off my bed. I walked downstairs.

"What do you even want me to do?" I asked her.

"It's okay, I already did it."

"Oh my god!" I groaned trudging up to my room. When I got back I checked my phone. My heart dropped, I had a text from Gumball. I opened it and read it.

'Can we talk? Please?'

Oh god, he probably wants to tell me in person how much he hates me. I texted back.

'Come over'

He knew where I lived so I didn't worry about giving an address. Sure enough ten minutes later my mom yelled up telling me I had a visitor. Instead of getting up I just waited, listening to the sound of his footsteps up the stairs. He opened my door and came in, sitting down on the swivel chair at my desk.

"You wanted to talk?" I said, he nodded but didn't say anything. I waited patiently for something to come out, eventually he opened up.

"I'm not mad at you or anything. I'm just wondering, do you like me?" What the fuck am I supposed to say to that. I'm just gonna go with my gut.

"I like you."

"Like-like?"

"Like-like." Gumball sighed at this.

"I, uh, I think I like you too." My heart skipped a beat.

"Really?" I asked, he nodded.

"You're gay?" I asked, he nodded again.

"Me too." I said.

"I could tell." He said smiling. He got up and came to sit next to me on my bed.

"So you like me, and I like you. What's next?" I asked.

"That sounds so stupid," he smirked, "but I guess you could take me out on a date."

"Wait- are you implying that I do all the work?" I said.

"Well, yeah." He said smiling.

"Pshh whatever." I said. There was a pause before Gumball spoke up again.

"Fionna and Cake are gonna flip." Gummy said.

"What do you mean?" I asked. He looked at me, dumbfounded.

"Are you kidding me? They're always saying how cute we would be together."

"Those girls are downright crazy."

"True. Very true." I glanced at my clock and saw it was 5:30. My dad would be home very soon.

"Gumball?" I asked seriously.

"Yeah?" He said looking at me, wondering why there was a sudden change of tone.

"My dad's coming home and you know how much of a jerk he is, right?"

"Yup."

"Okay, so will you please stay here so he doesn't do anything?"

"Of course."

"Thank you!" I exclaimed wrapping my arms around him in relief. My dad would never say anything too harsh if there was company.

I guess I ended up pouncing on Gummy because he fell back. He hugged back, though. I pulled away a tiny bit and made it so I was hovering over him, held up by my arms. At this point most people would be trying to get off of him but instead I just kind of stood there.

He was just really beautiful. And beautiful things wouldn't be beautiful if no one looked at them. Therefore, I must stare at him all the time.

"Marshall! Your dad's here!" My mom yelled up making me have to get off Gummy. I stood up and helped him up as well.

"If he says anything stupid, just ignore it. Don't, and I mean don't, try to say anything back at him."

"Okay." He said quietly. I think I was starting to scare him with the way I was talking about my dad. Oh well. I motioned for us to go and followed him towards the door. Right as he was about to step out I reached forward and hugged him. He gasped but then hugged back. I let him go and we both walked downstairs. Sure enough, my dad walked in.

"Hello!" He said. His voice sounded happy but his face didn't. Instantly my mom gushed all over him.

"Hi honey. How was trip? Did the meeting go well? Did you get everything done?" Blah blah blah. Annoying. Dad mumbled answers to Mom than sat down at the kitchen table. I led Gumball over there as well and sat down, with him next to me. Mom went around dishing out food to everyone. I noticed that my dad wouldn't even look at me.

Maybe I'm just reading into things too much.

"Who's your friend Marshall?" My dad asked, staring intently at Gummy.

"Gumball." I said. He kept looking everywhere but me. Mom came and sat down next to Dad. She smiled and began to ate. I picked at my food, the presence of my dad made my stomach clench. Gumball ate slowly, my dad hadn't even picked up his fork.

"I see you got more piercings." He finally looked at me but I wish he hadn't. His eyes were full of distaste.

"Yes, don't they look nice?" My mom said. She really needs to shut up.

"They look hideous." I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.

"No they don't, Marshall." Mom said.

"Whatever." I muttered. I glanced at Gumball. He looked spaced out.

(Gumball's POV)

There is no other way to put it, Marshall's dad is an asshole.

"Who do you think you are? Some rebel? A punk?" Marshall's dad taunted. I looked at Marshall. He had anger in his eyes, but there was mixed in fear. Wow, I finally met someone that made Marshall scared! Rare.

"Stop." Marshall said in a small voice. It was so strange seeing him so scared. If this was someone from school they'd already be on the ground bleeding.

"Don't fight, we have a guest." Marshall's mom said. Marshall's dad looked at me with a strange look on his face.

"You're quite the fellow aren't you?" He asked, "Marshall, why don't you dress like him? Nice, crisp, and clean cut."

"Because then I'd look like a dork." Hey! My look isn't dorky! It's adorable.

"That's enough." Marshall's mom said. Marshall groaned and got up walking towards his room. I got up and awkwardly followed him. We walked into his room and I closed the door behind us.

"Your Dad's and ass." I said. He smirked and nodded. I sat down on his bed and he sat next to me.

"Ugh. I just hate him so much!" He said in an exasperated tone.

"Well, if it helps any, I like your piercings. I think they're hot." He looked at me and smiled.

"Thanks, Gummy."

"No problem, Marshmallow." I said hugging him, smiling like a dork.

"You're too cute." He said.

"So that date...?"

"Yeah, what about it?"

"What were you thinking of doing?"

"Gummy, I found out I had to do it, like, and hour ago. I haven't thought of anything!"

"Can watch a movie together for our date?"

"Like, at the cinema?"

"No, here."

"I have Netflix."

"I know you do."

"Well than, Gummy, how about tomorrow after school you come over for our date?"

"Okay." I said smiling. I can't believe it! I'm going on a date with Marshall Lee. I was smiling so hard my cheeks hurt. My phone buzzed pulling me from that moment. There was a text from my mom telling me to come home.

"I have to go home." I said getting up. Marshall got up too and walked me all the way to the front door.

"Bye, Marshy." I said turning around and hugging him. My back was up against the wall and his hands were around my waist. He hugged me tightly and then let me go. I walked out of his house and made my way towards my own.
