Hesitant Lies (Karma x Nagisa)

PHASE 7: Into the Base

"So, Karma said that he saw you shooting those three guys?" Kayano was repeating the story I'd just told her, and I nodded in response. "But you told him you had no idea what he was talking about?" Another nod. "And he believed you?"

You see, instead of telling Kayano the story of how Karma was onto Korosensei-for reasons I still didn't understand-and how I'm thinking that he may be an assassin as well, I came up with my own story.

Trust me, she would've freaked out and started planning a million different ways to either kill him or get him on our side, and we don't need that happening right now.

The goal is the assassinate Karma's parents, and that's it. Kayano is only here to make sure I don't die.

"After much convincing, yes. He's still going to keep a close eye on me, but I don't have time to worry about that. There's only a few weeks left of this month."

Kayano raised an eyebrow at me, as if trying to decipher any lies, but I kept a straight yet slightly annoyed face as she inspected me.

"Hm. Alright, if you're sure."

"Nagisa!"

I blinked and turned my head to see Karma calmly walking towards us, one hand in his pocket and the other waving to us.

Kayano immediately perked up, and I was hoping it was only her trying to fit her role. "Hi, Karma-kun!" She waved back enthusiastically.

"Hey." I mumbled, turning my head away just a bit as he stopped before us.

Why do I keep looking away? It's not like he really knows anything...

"Aw, what's wrong Sleeping Beauty, tired?"

I turned back to face him with narrowed eyes and slightly burning cheeks. "I'm not 'Sleeping Beauty.' "

He chuckled and I couldn't help but smile a bit. I saw Kayano looking back and forth between us with a sort of confused look on her face, but chose to ignore it.

"Say, Nagisa, you want to come over sometime?" Karma scratched the back of his head, looking a bit sheepish, and my eyes widened.

"Oh, uh, s-sure." I blinked when he raised an eyebrow. "I'm free right now, I guess."

"Cool, you can walk with me then."

"What about me?" Kayano asked in a small voice and I turned my head.

"Ah, well, my parents are pretty strict, so they'd most likely freak out if I brought a girl over."

This made me frown a bit. Not because Kayano couldn't come, and not because of what he said, but because of how he said it.

I wasn't quite sure what to call it, but he sounded kind of uncomfortable.

"That's fine. Oh, right! I forgot to ask you!" Kayano sent me a brief gaze, quick enough for no one to notice, but I got the drift.

Her eyes said, "Go with it."

I gave the slightest nod and she blinked once, notifying me that she knew I understood.

"My birthday is coming up this month, and I'm thinking about having a party! You should come!" She offered in a bubbly tone, clasping her hands in front of her chest and smiling brightly.

Karma gave a small smile. "Sure, why not. What day is it?"

"The last day of the month, March 31st! I'll tell you the times once I figure them out." She giggled a bit and Karma nodded.

"I'll try to be there, then. See ya." He said and I bid her a goodbye as she turned to walk back to her apartment.

"Well then, let's go, shall we?" He grinned at me and I rolled my eyes as we started walking in the opposite direction of Kayano.

Finally. I thought. Maybe now I can figure out my plan of assassination.
