Nyctophobia: the fear of the dark
It's not an uncommon phobia. Many people in this world have been given the fear of pitch black surroundings. Places where one can't even see their own hand because of the dark. Where it's so black, it's like the color of the darkness muffles all of your senses, though your sight is the one most affected.
I can see why people are so frightened at the thought of being in the darkness. When you're in the dark, it's an open invitation for your mind to let loose its inner demons that can't survive in the light. You're mind starts letting your fears loose and you begin to imagine seeing them just grabbing you and pulling you into that black hole without you ever knowing until it was too late and you were already captured.
You can't see anything. You go crazy in the dark. You walk around in circles, desperately trying to find a way out. A light at the end of the tunnel. But, when fear takes you, you don't think straight. You're too scared to think logically. You just want safety. A security blanket.
The sight of light can immediately comfort an individual with nyctophobia. Something as big as a chandelier or something as small as a nightlight. Any glow of brightness gives them hope.
One doesn't have to be a child to wish for a nightlight.
Some people with the fear aren't fortunate enough to find their nightlight.
And that's the scariest thing a person with nyctophobia could ever go through.
Because life is full of darkness.
And some don't ever find the light at the end of their journey.
