It's dark. I can't see anything. All that's around me is dark shadows and a sea of black. I have no way of knowing what's in my way or where I need to go to get out of this abyss.
Suddenly, glass shatters somewhere in the dark and I jump, my heart rate skyrocketing. Fear is slowly creeping in, targeting me.
I attempt to walk forward and find a way out, but I'm shoved backward by a pair of hands that was enclosed in the darkness. I fall, hitting my back on the ground. For a moment, I can't breathe. I can't seem to pull oxygen into my lungs and calm myself down.
After a moments breath, I get up. I begin to think of someway to get out of here. But nothing comes to mind.
Suddenly, I feel the warm breath from someone on my neck. I freeze, rooted to my spot. I can't run, move, scream, or hit. Fear has entered the paralysis stage and my limbs don't seem to function anymore. I can't escape.
I feel tears begin to brim in my eyes as the person continues to shakily breathe behind me. I hear movement, like the person has shifted their arms.
The tears begin to cascade down my cheeks as I hear a laugh of ecstasy emerge from the muffled and quiet dark. I take a deep breath. I know what comes next.
I feel a pair of cold and clammy hands slowly enclose around my neck. They begin to squeeze, cutting off my airway and forcing me to suffocate. My ears are popping, the muffled dark becoming more quiet than ever before.
My eyes close, my body giving up.
The last thing I hear is the evil and malicious laugh of my mother.
I scream and jolt forward from my position on my bed, my heart pounding and palms sweating. I reach up and touch my cheeks, feeling the tears falling freely down my face. I jump from the covers, feeling enclosed underneath them. I flick on my light switch and the room floods with light.
My lungs are on fire. I'm drawing quick breaths and not getting enough air into them to calm myself down. I can practically see my heart pounding through my shirt. I desperately attempt to wipe my sweaty hands dry, but to no avail.
I hear my door open and I flip around to see my 10 year old sister, Clara, standing in the doorway. Her facial expressions tell me that she's frightened. She must have heard my screaming.
She cautiously walks forward and shuts the door quietly behind her. She takes my shaking hands and pulls me into a hug, knowing that her embrace can easily calm me down. I exhale slowly and take a few deep breaths. The ache in my chest slowly begins to fade, my heart stops hurting, and I'm breathing normally now.
The fear has finally left.
Clara looks up at me and smiles. "Are you better now?" She asks.
"Much better. Thank you." I answer.
Clara lets go of my hands briefly to turn off the light. Once the room is encased in darkness, she takes my hands once more and leads me to my bed. I slowly climb under the covers, Clara doing the same.
I take another deep breath and begin to stroke Clara's hair. I kiss the top of her head before laying down completely and closing my eyes.
"I love you, Clare bear." I whispered quietly, sleep slowly creeping in.
Right before I fall asleep, I hear her little voice whisper back faintly:
"I love you too, Chlobird."
