I have a friend
Unlike any other human being I've met.
If you like conventional
She wouldn't be the one for you.
But in a life full of forbidden
Boundaries and rules,
An untamed spirit such as she,
Was a sight for sore eyes,
An answer to a prayer never muttered
But longed for still.
My faith may be Earthly-bound
But in her presence
I began to float away.
I have a friend
Whose words are spoken with such rawness
And evokes emotions
Stowed away in the dark and desolate trench
Where they were exiled.
She's a comet the cosmos
Never could chain down.
A high you never could come down from.
But the world hungrily scavenges
For what little trace remains
Of the good and beauty.
And with its wretched hands of filth
It tarnished a hole inside you.
Because you were the light
That outshined the rest.
And like a moth
It was drawn to your flame.
And now you're hurt.
And band-aids won't suffice
To cure a bullet wound.
But despite your injuries
You're far from spoiled goods.
And though you hold your flaws
Close and dear to your tender heart,
These are temporary things.
You, my friend
Have tunnel vision.
You can always see
When you're wrong
But you are blind
To everything you've done right.
And whatever scars have etched
Themselves inside you
And whatever memories
Stain your thoughts
It's okay to let it go
Of the demons that cling to you.
I will gingerly take your hand
And help you through it.
And I know
You hold yourself above the rest.
But try as you might,
And try you do,
These standards are unattainable
And frankly unbelievable.
And I can hear your voice now.
I know.
I'm one to talk.
But that doesn't mean I'm wrong.
There is a girl
I swear whatever resemblances you may share
Are purely coincidental.
I have a friend
With chocolate brown eyes
So dark and deep
You can't resist falling into them.
And within her soul
Is a kind of untainted purity.
And her smile,
The one I've memorized,
The real one.
The one that reaches her eyes
And crinkles her nose
Is contagious.
And her laughs are symphonies
That send shivers raking down your spine.
She drinks tea religiously
For breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
She's a puppy eyes expert
And she won't hesitate to use it.
She'll never admit it but
She's a complete and utter sap.
She loves converses and army boots,
Band-tees and flannel.
She chews gum and pops bubbles.
And she reads all the classics.
But don't be deceived
She is not perfect.
Her memory is slightly rusty.
And though she's oddly pessimistic
And her trust
Is piece of string
Worn thin by relentless tugging.
I know my words
Do little to repair years of wrongdoing
And self-loathing.
But I can't help
Spill my heart out to you.
I can't help but think,
If I tell you everyday
What you mean to me
With all the honesty and earnest I can muster,
Then maybe you'll see what I see.
Maybe that's foolish.
But I have a friend,
A very best friend
And she deserves
So much more than she's willing to take.
I have a friend,
And nothing in the universe
Could convince me
To find another.
