Chapter 4
"So, let me get this straight. Your dad is the Sun?" Seth asked bewildered. I nodded.
"More or less. He drives through the sky every day and the sun moves with him. But he's not actually the sun that is a great ball of fire. It's kinda hard to explain.""This camp you go to," started Sam", you said you have siblings, brothers?" I could see the hurt in his eyes. But it would do him no good if I lied about this.
"Yes. Michael and Will are the ones I'm closest to, but there are others too. Some of them might still be out there, not knowing who they are or still in cabin eleven."
Sam nodded, deep in thought.
"But Sam, you'll always be my big brother. I'm one of the oldest of my cabin back at the camp, so I'm always the one to look after the little ones. It's good to be the younger one for change." Sam smiled at me, and gave me a one-armed hug, kissing the top of my head."So, explain to me this deal with the cabins. Why are there different ones?" Asked Jake.
"Well, each cabin presents one of the twelve Olympian gods. If your parent is one of them and claims you as their own, you move to the cabin of that god or goddess. If not, then you stay at cabin eleven, which is Hermes' cabin, he's the god of travellers, merchants and thieves etcetera.""What do you mean, 'claims you as their own'?" Asked Leah. Ha! I knew she was interested.
"Well, the gods are busy and sometimes... Sometimes they forget us. It gets a little easier if your parent acknowledges you as their child in public, claiming you are one of their own. But even after that, the relationship between the parent and the demigod is not really close. I've only met my dad twice and I'm considered lucky. Many of my siblings have never met dad. The gods aren't exactly known to be parental. But when you get claimed, you at least get siblings. So it's kinda nice."
I could feel their pitying eyes on me, but I didn't want their pity, nor did I need it.
"How did you meet your dad, then? If it's so rare to happen?" Leah's tone was actually nice. I was a little shocked.
"The first time, it was my sixteenth birthday. He just showed up at camp. Of course I knew who he was immediately, he looked just like me. He hugged me, wished me happy birthday, handed me car keys and was gone a second later. I found Porsche outside the camp border, with a golden bow on it.""He got you a Porsche?" All the guys yelled.
"Yeah."
"Well, where is it?" Jake was looking around, as if trying to find my car.
"Not here, you dumbass. I didn't drive from NY now did I?" I could hear a lot of disappointed groans. I decided to continue my story."The car is really useful. I'm able to drive to school, but get to sleep at camp, safe from monsters. The car has some kind of illusion on it, the monsters can't smell me while I'm in it."
"The second time I met my dad was about a year ago. I was on a mission, and met his sister, Artemis. He happened to stop by while I was with the Hunters."
"You keep mentioning these Hunters. Who are they?" Asked Sam, but before I could answer, all of my inner alarms went haywire.
"Something is coming," I said, scanning the surroundings. We were lucky Sam's place was a little away from the other houses. We did not need mortals messing around with monsters.
"Shift!" Said Sam and suddenly I was surrounded by wolves.I tried locating the threat. I scanned the nearby forest, searching. My bow was ready in my hands.
Then it lunged out of the forest and I froze in fear.
"A drakon," I whispered, terrified and my arms shaking. A couple of Empusai were no big deal. A hellhound I could manage. But a drakon? I had only heard stories of them, none of them good. They were extremely hard to kill. Some of them could spit fire like dragons, some acid so strong it could turn your bones into liquid in a matter of seconds. Most could paralyse their victims with their eyes. Each was unique, and I had no way to know what kind of powers this one had. It slithered towards us, its emerald green scales gleaming in the sun.
