“It’ll only be for a short while.” I explained flinging some clothes into my bag. I wrinkled my nose at the hideous yellow dress before cramming it into place. Smoky meowed at me, throwing herself in the bag. I chuckled, picking her up and setting her back aside. “I’m sorry, as much as I’d love to take you with me, I can’t girl. The Hitatchiin twins would kill me.”
“We certainly would.” They agreed in perfect unison. I rolled my eyes. Dad rubbed his beard, eyeing the good-looking boys hanging in the doorframe.
“India October Valentine, what am I going to do with you?” He sighed. The Hitachiin twins exchanged excited looks. I shook my head.
“October?” The snickered.
“Yes, yes. India after the country I was supposed to be born in, October after the month I was born in.” I grumbled. “Moving on. Dad, when Ryley gets up, can you please give him this?”
I handed him a neat, folded up note I wrote in the tea-shop. Dad gave a weak nod.
“Sure, sugar. Whatever you want. So, you’ll be staying with them?” He was still uneasy about the idea, but I knew he’d warm up to it once their mother called to confirm the arrangement.
“Sir, it’s for the best. The twins are great guys, they’ll protect your daughter with their lives.” Haruhi tried.
“Our lives?” They squeaked. “We didn’t agree to that.”
Haruhi gave them a hard look and they shut up.
“Aren’t you the little cross dressing girl?” My dad asked. I slapped the palm of my hand to my head, zipping up my bag.
“Dad.” I growled. “She’s my friend, drop it.”
“Just checking.” He sighed. “This is all so new to me. Indie, I’m scared.”
“I know.” I smiled slinging my bag over my shoulder. “I’m scared too.”
There was a slight pause.
Hikaru coughed.
Kaoru elbowed him in the side.
I backed up.
“Mr. Valentine, it was a pleasure meeting you. I wish it were under better circumstances, but I assure you, I see your daughter as my daughter. You don’t have to worry. I’ll keep her safe. I give you my word.” Tamaki did a theatrical bow to prove this to my father, but it only made my dad even more unsure.
“Can’t we just trust in the restraining order? I feel like I could offer her better protection.”
“Are you really willing to risk your daughter’s life on that?” Kyoya piped up. “We know about her past. Do you really want a repeat?”
Dad’s dark gray eyes clouded. He sniffled. “No.” He breathed. I shot Kyoya a horrible glare. How dare he!
“Guys, we should really be going.” I said pushing them out the door. Smoky meowed, I ignored her. “Bye, dad! I love you. Don’t forget to give the note to Ryley! It’s really important.”
“Ok.” He choked. “I love you too.”
I gave a faint nod filing out the door. Dad remained frozen in place. I doubt I’ve ever seen him so worried in my life.
