When I woke up, my head was aching. I sat up in my bed quickly, causing my vision to blur. When my vision was back, I stood up from my bottom bunk and look over at the single bed with the broken picture frame next to it. The guilt starting to form back into me. I looked around the room, the sunlight seeping in through the small window that laid above the nightstand next to the bed. I heard faint voices come out from the bedroom. I heard a soft knock on my door.
“Lauren?” I didn’t recognize the voice that came from the other side. I walked over to the door and placed a hand hesitantly on the door knob.
“Who is it?” I whispered into the door.
“Dani.” The voice responded back. I hesitantly opened the door, standing face in front of Dani.
“What do you want?” I asked wearily. If I was Dani, I wouldn’t take a second look at me.
“Nothing.” She gave me a heart warming smile that made me feel like everything was okay.
“Dani, I am just so sorry about last night. I regret everything I said and-”
“Don’t worry about it.” She cut me off.
“But Dani-” I tried to negotiate with her.
“Lauren. It’s fine!” She raised her voice a little higher than before. I walked away from the door and sat down on the bottom bunk. Dani followed me in, closing the door behind her. She wandered over to me, but was stopped in front of the shards of glass and the broken picture frame. She picked all of the pieces and sat beside me, her eyes locked on the picture frame.
“Its fine, Lauren.” Dani whispered as she held up the broken frame.
“No its not. I was upset and-” Dani rests her hand on my shoulder, cutting me off.
“I would’ve done the same.” She gives me a smile and sets the picture frame to the side and wraps her arm around me. I honestly don’t know why her touching me isn’t affecting me as much as the other girls touch.
“Dani?” I look over at her.
“Yes, Lauren?” She smiles.
“Who is Sarah?” The question has never left my mind for the past few hours.
“She’s our manager.”
